lightweight nextcloud replacement to backup phone photos? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- icanburnwater · 2023-10-02 06:03 im looking for a lightweight nextcloud replacement that i can run at home and use as a place to automatically upload photos from my phone to? i had nextcloud running on a pi a few years ago and had the nextcloud app on my phone and it would auto upload my photo library to nextcloud daily. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shadoodled · 2023-10-02 06:16 [Photosync](https://www.photosync-app.com/home) + [SFTPGo](https://github.com/drakkan/sftpgo) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FeelingPapaya47 · 2023-10-02 07:17 [Immich](https://github.com/immich-app/immich) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Spuxilet · 2023-10-02 07:48 My nextcloud which i use to sync photos from 5 phones consumes 210 MB including postgresql + redis containers. Immich containers combined consume 1.1 GB and i do not even use it yet. I am just testing it. That is not lightweight at all. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Spuxilet · 2023-10-02 07:53 [PhotoPrism + PhotoSync](https://www.photoprism.app/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Defiant-Ad-5513 · 2023-10-02 07:58 I also use SFTPGo but with [Folder Sync](https://play.google.com/store /apps/details?id=dk.tacit.android.foldersync.lite) it can do background sync in the free version ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FeelingPapaya47 · 2023-10-02 08:07 Not true, probably a misconfiguration on your side or simply cache. I have 10+ users (whole family) and currently sit at about 180MB RAM usage for the whole stack. While the machine learning container can sip a good chunk more you do not need that feature at all for normal photo sync and it can be turned off. I recommend leaving it on though because it adds to the Google Photos experience. I have it turned on and that container alone sits at 1MB waiting for tasks. It depends on what you want - the PhotoSync suggestion is perfect if you just want to move files. If you want a nice gallery app and many features Immich beats PhotoSync and Nextcloud by a lot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Spuxilet · 2023-10-02 08:15 Immich is in experimental state and i would not dare to even suggest it to others, i am not saying this Immichs developers say it themselves. This is what you read first on it's github page. `The project is under very active development.` `Expect bugs and breaking changes.` `Do not use the app as the only way to store your photos and videos.` `Always follow 3-2-1 backup plan for your precious photos and videos!` So please when you suggest it to someone explain this to him/her too. Maybe that person needs stable software to host his/her life photo/videos and not be afraid when one day some photo/videos disappear. I have seen this kind of problems about immich in here many times. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-10-02 08:22 NextCloud client + KaraDAV ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FeelingPapaya47 · 2023-10-02 08:35 Meh, it's not like that text is hidden, anyone can decide for themselves if they want to take that "risk". For my part idc, the files are stored as flat files on the filesystem and those are of course backed up (and I recommend you do the same). So at most I would lose any metadata Immich creates for me like machine learning - data you would not have in the first place when just using something more basic. But if you really want to talk about stability, you REALLY should look into the exorbitant Nextcloud faces during upgrades. I have lost multiple Nextcloud installs in the past (Docker and bare metal) because something simply dies during upgrades. I've had to switch to Seafile only because of that mess. And it's by far not me alone, just look at this sub or various blog posts online. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- oi4utj29 · 2023-10-02 08:46 just to add: photoprism has features behind a subscription: [https://w ww.photoprism.app/editions](https://www.photoprism.app/editions) i prefer something like folder sync (android) or immich ---------------------------------------------------------------------- webbkorey · 2023-10-02 08:52 I'm using Folder Sync ---------------------------------------------------------------------- agilelion00 · 2023-10-02 09:08 I use Synching to PC then backup cloud / NAS from there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- trexxeon · 2023-10-02 10:14 People in here circlejerk around immich like they were paid techfluencers.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-10-02 10:50 Or photosync + photoprism, which has a built in WebDAV Server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-10-02 10:51 Yes, tailscale and immich are promoted like they are the holy grail of software. It's emberassing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-10-02 10:52 It has all the features you need for free though, so relax. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-10-02 10:58 Also, I'd prefer a developer to be upfront his hope to make a living from his software then submarine this for later. Has the immich developers stated they live to develop their software for free and will do so until the end of their days, because they have nothing better to do? If not, I assume they might want to monetize on their product at some point. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- trexxeon · 2023-10-02 11:25 And don’t forget the lord and savior Cloudflare.. Suddenly no one cares that cloudflare becomes the whole internets man in the middle ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProbablePenguin · 2023-10-02 12:02 Folder Sync works with basically any remote storage, probably the best option for something universal and light weight. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fnord_clown · 2023-10-02 12:08 For light weight, I used lomorage in the past. Now I just use my synology and it's excellent. But lomorage runs perfectly fine on the rpi. Photoprism is very good but I found it bulky for auto upload etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Spuxilet · 2023-10-02 13:05 These people do not give a crap about privacy or self hosting. Why they call is selfhosting if they give out all their data to a service like that and rely on that service to be able to reach their own so called self hosted services. I do not even know why they not just use google photos at this point. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Spuxilet · 2023-10-02 13:12 Of course they will monetize it, but first they'll give all the things for free until product is stable and used by many. When tens and hundreds of thousands will be dependent on their service that's when they'll start hiding cool features behind the paywall. It's free tier may become even less useful then photoprism is. TBH i never found any feature i wanted on my server. Just having multiple accounts in photoprism would be useful, but not having is not a problem for me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-10-02 13:29 Well I just paid for photoprism because it's a cool software even though I didn't need the paid features. I mean it's regular people behind these projects and they are trying to make a living from it. It's fucked up when people want commercial grade software but find the idea offensive to pay (voluntarily) for it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Spuxilet · 2023-10-02 13:50 That's well said. What i meant is immich makes people think they offer the best for free, but in reality it's just experimental software and they are not open about it's future. I am 99.9 % sure it will offer paid tiers, but i do not know to what extent will free tier usable. It would be ok if they said it already that they are going to do this, what makes it bad is silence on their front and suddenly when users are there and product is stable they'll drop bomb on us. That is why i do not want to depend on immich. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lankiness8244 · 2023-10-02 14:55 Photoprism ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bytepond · 2023-10-02 15:13 I wouldn't call it lightweight, but it does do a fantastic job ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MrWhistles · 2023-10-02 15:18 Seafile is working well for me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ChesterDood · 2023-10-02 15:26 I use SMBSync and do a nightly backup to a samba server ---------------------------------------------------------------------- icanburnwater · 2023-10-02 15:52 ill look into that ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ZeltasGotSteez · 2023-10-02 16:10 Can Samba server offer a Web GUI bounded to a specific port, and then accessed via Tailscale? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mystarkfuture · 2023-10-02 16:51 If you want to view photos and videos in the web console, you need ffmpeg in the backend and that makes it not so light weight anymore.
