GoGrow - Homestead planning and image annotation app - first release reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bopcrane · 2023-10-01 21:57 Greetings fellow self-hosters! I wanted to see if other people might be interested in a project I've been working on - hopefully a few people on here will find it useful I've tried a few different map, planners, and various gardening apps to try to manage my homestead better. I do a bit of orcharding, landscaping, and gardening, and wanted an app that would help me be able to keep track of where I've planted things, and what they were, as well as to keep track of critical infrastructure around my lot. I didn't really find an app that ticked all the boxes I needed for this, so I decided to learn python a bit and made GoGrow as a pet project over the last few months. The GoGrow app makes a folder to store each uploaded image in with its own SQLite database for all of your marker and line data relating to that image, as well as another database for journal entries relating to these markers or line objects. This flexibility in this system along with the built in rich text editor allows for journal entries to have relevant markers and lines data linked to them, making it easy to track progress on a project or homestead over time, and allow for building of knowledgebases around projects. All of this data never leaves GoGrow, and can easily be exported out, something I was initially very concerned with when I was looking for apps with which to manage my own homestead and projects. The GoGrow app is still in the early stages of development, but I feel that it's progressed enough that I'd like to get some feedback from people on what other features might be good, or if there are any UI or UX things in particular that can be improved on in particular. It's all open source, free, and self-hostable - and (I think) relatively easy to get going with docker or just running as a python flask app with a few command line commands. I might consider offering linux and windows executables in the future if people would want that You can check out the GoGrow project on my github [here](https://github.com/DaytimeLobster/gogrow) Feel free to message me with any feedback or suggestions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-10-01 22:40 Super interesting, thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bopcrane · 2023-10-01 22:42 Thanks for checking it out! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-10-01 23:34 Looks cool. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NANOTECH97 · 2023-10-02 05:55 This is awesome, I will definitely check it out. In case you are looking for feature ideas, it would be great if it had a seed inventory of sorts, so a particular kind of plant (with its sowing and harvesting months) can quickly be assigned to a location in the garden. Currently I do this with excel, but if your project included that it would cover most of my garden planning tools. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sparky5dn1l · 2023-10-02 08:06 Looking promising! If u sing it for writing journel, using SQLite is not too reliable for the long run. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-10-02 08:19 Why not? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bopcrane · 2023-10-02 12:47 Thanks for the advice! I'll look into this in the near future. It was something I wrestled with at the beginning, and just fell into the current backend arrangement. I'll try to do some testing on the upper limits of journal storage and see if this might be something to improve on! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bopcrane · 2023-10-02 12:51 Thank you - that is a good idea! I'll look into how I might be able to implement a feature like this. If you have any specific idea for the UI or what something like this would look like, feel free to send me a message. Once I get the next big round of bug fixes and general improvements done, I'll be looking to add some features such as this ---------------------------------------------------------------------- strangebox · 2023-10-02 13:09 SQLlite hate network shares. So, if you want to keep compute and storage separated, it can get annoying. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jmackles · 2023-10-02 13:10 Oh man this looks cooool ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BubbleNucleator · 2023-10-02 13:59 This is interesting, I'm renovating an old farm house and I've been using ms paint to plan and document stuff, something a little more structured is a great idea. Some way to export everything to like a folder of html docs for off- line use would be great. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bopcrane · 2023-10-02 15:22 That was a concern I had using SQLite. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to test concurrent writes to the db when multiple users are using the app, and subsequently the performance (or lack of performance) of SQLite there is unknown to me. I will add this to the project readme to-do to work on at some point in the near future - I'm considering rewriting some of the backend python and swapping out SQLite for MariaDB, but I need to research other databases more first before deciding which way to go Thank you for the valuable feedback ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dontquestionmyaction · 2023-10-02 16:32 Only if your network is flaky. Sqlite doesn't mind network shares, it's rock solid, but if you write bad data...yeah. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tracch · 2023-10-02 17:14 I was just thinking of trying to somehow create my own grow diary journal for cannabis. I'd like to give this a try! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Crogdor · 2023-10-03 01:31 Man, I wish land was affordable. 3 deck planters and an indoor grow wall is all I have space for. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- amcco1 · 2023-10-08 00:55 This looks very interesting. My parents have an orchard and this could be fantastic for keeping track of the different varieties of trees and where they are located. I would love to try this, however I'm spoiled by docker and a docker user only. I am many other people strictly use docker-compose files only. I use Portainer for mine. I DO NOT want to have to clone a Github repo to deploy a docker container. Pleaseeeee create a docker image and upload to dockerhub. It makes thing SOOOO much easier. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bopcrane · 2023-10-08 01:55 Sure, I'll look into making a docker image available as soon as I can. Thanks for the suggestion!
