Thermal Issue reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- snowkittens · 2023-10-01 18:47 Hey y’all, I’m running two Plex servers at the moment, one on an HP ProDesk 600 G1 Mini with an i5-4590T and on an HP EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini with an i5-8500T. I’ve reapplied thermal paste to both systems, but for whatever reason when I play a 4K file, the EliteDesk heats up to 84C and the fan ramps up within 10 minutes. When I play the same file on the ProDesk, I get some stuttering but the system only heats up to 44C. I haven’t used any of Plex’s premium features, and I’m not using a dedicated GPU. Any thoughts on why the EliteDesk is running hot? Thanks in advanced! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-01 19:25 /r/Plex ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cylian91460 · 2023-10-01 19:43 Maybe because your using the CPU for encoding? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- snowkittens · 2023-10-01 19:53 Would that fall under hardware acceleration? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- seniledude · 2023-10-01 20:03 Yes if there is no other graphics to be used ---------------------------------------------------------------------- snowkittens · 2023-10-01 20:09 If I’m not mistaken that’s a premium feature under Plex Pass whether it be a subscription or lifetime pass. I don’t have Plex Pass. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- snowkittens · 2023-10-01 20:13 I just checked the dashboard and it looks like it’s using H264 - Transcode ---------------------------------------------------------------------- seniledude · 2023-10-01 20:25 Transcoding is done via a graphics card. Most likely the one on the cpu is there is not a graphics card installed ---------------------------------------------------------------------- secondanom · 2023-10-01 20:44 He said he doesn't have a plex pass and Hardware Transcoding is a premium feature. Without Plex Pass it will be software transcoding, the cpu will be hot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- seniledude · 2023-10-01 21:17 Ah I see. Thank you for the correction ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-10-03 01:21 ## Post Removed Hey, snowkittens!
