Seeking Advice: Is It Too Early to Introduce Google Ads to My Project? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Accurate-Screen8774 · 2023-10-01 15:06 I'm working on a self-hosted project and am contemplating the idea of introducing Google Ads. However, I have a few concerns and would love to hear your thoughts: User Growth: I am inclined towards gaining more users at this stage and worry that introducing ads might deter some potential users. What has been your experience with introducing ads in the early stages of a project? Security: My project prides itself on maintaining a high level of security, and integrating external JavaScript scripts like those required for Google Ads could be perceived as a compromise. Though I believe the risk is no more than on any other site, I'm wary of the perception. How have you navigated this in your projects? Affordability: Currently, the costs for Amazon S3 are manageable without the income from ads. However, monetizing through ads could provide a cushion and potentially accelerate the growth of the project. Community Perception: Lastly, how has the community responded to ad integration in your projects? Have you noticed a change in user engagement or community sentiment? I truly value the insight and experiences this community can share. Thank you in advance for your help! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CyberTailor · 2023-10-01 15:13 Is it open source software? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-10-01 15:14 lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Accurate-Screen8774 · 2023-10-01 15:21 No... but it's free to use. It's a work in progress and very experimental. As mentioned it early in the project and there is much to be done before it is working as the poc I am aiming for. I can't give any estimate on when (or if?) I would want to open source it. At the moment it wouldn't make sense because it's being actively developed. The project amounts to a webapp (a website?) so it only requires a static server. I just have my development changes up there. (It was briefly on GitHub pages before I switched to aws S3). It's far from being a "product" to rely on for anything. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-01 15:32 What does it have to do with selfhosting? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Accurate-Screen8774 · 2023-10-01 15:41 It's a installable pwa. Unlike a traditional app it's doesn't use the device storage directly and is kept sanboxed from your device by "localStorage" provided by the browser (big cookie?). It might help think of it like the internet is my app, what that appstore is to a regular app. It is also all static html/js/css.. which can be saved from the app URL (ctrl/cmd+s)... but that needs more instructions around things like [csp](https://observatory.mozilla.org/analyze/chat- staging.positive-intentions.com) (for safety against browser plugins, etc) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-01 15:43 Still missing the point... Try subs like /r/webdev etc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Accurate-Screen8774 · 2023-10-01 15:52 I believe I have the correct audience. I think there are many projects mentioned in this subreddit with similar goals. While it is a webapp, I would like there to be a distinction in how my app works. A previous post [attempting to elaborate ](https://www.reddit.com/r/se lfhosted/comments/16jqkfc/redefining_selfhosted/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-01 15:53 No you dont. Good luck. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Accurate-Screen8774 · 2023-10-01 16:07 Thanks. That would be unfortunately. It wouldn't be the first time my post got banned on here. I would like people to consider how my app works related to things like matrix in a decentralised selfhosted way. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-01 16:09 Posts dont get banned. But if your posts keep getting removed, maybe thats a clear hint that this isnt the right place... crazy idea. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Accurate-Screen8774 · 2023-10-01 16:12 It isn't often removed. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-10-01 16:13 Cool. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- budius333 · 2023-10-01 17:21 Reading this and others of your comments I believe you just don't know what self-hosted means. If the app runs 100% local, it's not self-hosted. If the app runs on your server, it's not self-hosted. If the app runs local, but it's a web-app and the files are hosted on your server, it's not self-hosted. Self-hosted means, there's a server and I own the server! I'm sure your project is very interesting, but at this point I'm sure even threads about Tailscale are more related to self-hosted than this ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Accurate-Screen8774 · 2023-10-01 17:36 >there's a server and I own the server! It seems my thinking is unique. And I completely understand and respect your perspective. Thanks for your feedback.
