What should bemgy cooling solution for a 10year old laptop converted to home server. reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aarshmajmudar · 2023-09-30 20:18 Okay so I have a laptop with 2 TB storage, and i7 5th gen CPU, which I converted to Home server by installing openmediavault and running dockers on it. I basically use it for AdguardHome, NAS, Immich, Jellyfin, Arr family. How should I go about cooling it as it runs 24x7? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-09-30 20:20 Honestly, what does cooling your laptop have to do with selfhosting software services? Just because you might run selfhosted stuff on that laptop doesnt automatically make every single problem with that hardware a selfhosted software problem... smh ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Rocketsx12 · 2023-09-30 20:26 The laptop has its own cooling already, just don't block it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aarshmajmudar · 2023-09-30 20:30 I never mentioned its a selfhosted software problem, but since the time I got into selfhosting I learned a lot from here and helped a lot of people in this community with their problems, so when it comes to selfhosting this subreddit was my go to as people help each other learn, now I ran into a issue where I didn't have a proper server but a made up server using laptop, which ran into heating issues, so I asked for help from fellow selfhosters. If you don't have anything to add to help me plz don't intract with the post and ignore it. Thank you ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aarshmajmudar · 2023-09-30 20:33 Yes that's something I've been doing, by keeping my Laptop upside down as OMV can work headless, also removed the disk drive to make it hollow for better cooling and but as it runs a 24x7 I thought something additional might help ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-09-30 20:38 > I never mentioned its a selfhosted software problem But this sub is about **selfhosted software services** ... > Thank you Youre welcome. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LavaCreeperBOSSB · 2023-09-30 20:41 I just put it on a box and called it a day, it'll probably be fine ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LavaCreeperBOSSB · 2023-09-30 20:42 It'll be fine dont flip it over ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-09-30 21:04 Put it in a tub of water to water cool it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- slyzik · 2023-10-01 02:19 i would remove the battery. if it is not already removed. you will lose UPS, but it will reduce fire hazard. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nagashitw · 2023-10-01 07:23 Why keeping a laptop 24/7 would be bad? Free UPS built in. Can't find any problem except maybe for the lack of ECC (but you probably don't even need that) and maybe not use Nas disks. I have a similar laptop running k8s going strong for about 2 years. Just clean it once a year for dust and there you go. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ocheret · 2023-10-01 09:10 Put in in a tub of mineral oil (the variety used for electrical transformers). No conductivity, high thermal capacity, probably much less danger of a battery-caused fire. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-10-01 11:59 Probably a better plan. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-10-01 18:01 ## Post Removed Hey, aarshmajmudar!
