Anyone here use Parsec? Did it install a virus on my computer? ViGEm Bus Driver reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sugadugaduga · 2023-09-30 16:39 Logged into my windows VM today that I also use Parsec on and I got this weird update notification for a ViGEm Bus Driver. After doing some research it looks like a tool for trying to get Playstation controllers to work properly. I never installed DS4W or whatever its called. I have only used XBOX controllers locally, or Xbox/playstation over parsec (and parsec handles the set up afaik). Im thinking Parsec uses an implementaion of DS4W to get controllers recognized. From my research the company "Nefarius Software Solutions" seemed a bit shady and had someone thought they had malware in their software: https://www.reddit.com/r/DS4Windows/comments/sv588t/hi_guys_ i_would_like_to_disscus_somthing/ Turned out to be nothing, but Im a little worried now that parsec is installing random crap on my PC. Its just a gaming VM, so nothing that important on it, but it does have access to my full network.... Screenshots attached: https://imgur.com/a/dCAgPq0 I just removed all the software. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Monckey100 · 2023-09-30 16:44 Parsec isn't exactly a small company but if you're that paranoid you can monitor the packets it's sending and see if it's sending keystrokes somewhere it shouldn't. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-09-30 16:45 I am using Sunshine and it also recommends/offers to install ViGEmBus, regardless of PS or XB gamepad. It is definitely not a virus. > but Im a little worried now that parsec is installing random crap on my PC. It isnt. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mega_corvega · 2023-09-30 16:54 Parsec is legit. I’ve never had it install any drivers like that. You sure it wasn’t your VM host? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cutelolifan · 2023-09-30 17:48 It's perfectly safe and is exclusively used for gamepad emulation. It's used to emulate having a controller plugged in through parsec and it comes installed with it (although iirc it's optional during setup?). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sugadugaduga · 2023-09-30 18:01 Just seemed kind of shady. I installed Parsec not VIGEM or anything like that. The updater pops up and asking me if I want to update - does not look typical. Then the name of the company is literally "Nefarius Software Solutions" Are they joking or something??? Call it fucking "controller solutions" or something. Ridiculous. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sugadugaduga · 2023-09-30 18:01 no Parsec installed it. Its legit though I guess... Really wish it wasnt called "Nefarius Software Solutions"... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sugadugaduga · 2023-09-30 18:02 Seemed shady especially with the name. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-09-30 18:02 Sure sure... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tenekev · 2023-09-30 19:35 ViGEm - Virtual Gamepad Emulation And ~2min of looking around, mainly on Github, will tell you that Nefarious is a dev with lots of personal info and professional experience on his profile. Lots of contributions an accolades too. But I guess it's easier to post on Reddit and insist you weren't wrong. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Annual-Night-1136 · 2023-09-30 20:12 Do you really think a malware author would call his company that vs something “legit?” The name is the only thing you are upset about? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-09-30 21:07 That is where I went wrong naming my malware "Happy Happy Funtime This is Not a Virus". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- robearded · 2023-09-30 23:12 "name is shady" Then don't use it. You have no say in what someone uses as their nickname and their company name. Nobody forces you to use it. Uninstall parsec, delete your VM, throw your server and cut you internet line, just to be safe. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MoistCarpenter · 2023-10-01 00:56 It used to be legit but Vigem lost their name and website to a copyright troll, and the project is officially done. [https://docs.nefarius.at/projects/ViGEm/End-of- Life/](https://docs.nefarius.at/projects/ViGEm/End-of-Life/) You should delete it or update the installer, since the auto-updater will eventually point update requests to a completely different entity. The update just removes the autoupdate function. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sugadugaduga · 2023-10-01 03:07 Well maybe if you took ~2 min of reading the test of my post and not just the title you'd know what I actually said. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sugadugaduga · 2023-10-01 03:09 I am just confused on how it got there in the first place. I had a feeling it was parsec, but I was concerned that they are using someone elses software bundled with their software without me knowing. Its like when a game you buy installs some kind of anti-cheat that has low level access to your PC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sugadugaduga · 2023-10-01 03:11 Its a fucking controller driver, but they name themselves Nefarius.... Im just saying I installed parsec, not some DS3 for Windows or whatever bs it is. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- whenyoupubbin · 2023-10-01 06:09 Have you considered that maybe a malware creator wouldn’t name themselves Nefarious Software Solutions? I mean come on man unless it’s ransomware (which you would know) then it’s not going to be obvious ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sugadugaduga · 2023-10-02 21:32 At the end of the day I didnt install this software and the update notification is not typical. And yes there are "bad" apps with "bad" names.
