Domain name registrars with sane ID verification? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- detyrant · 2023-09-29 20:47 Papers please habit is rising among domain name registrars. I understand that it's necessary, but every time I send a copy of my identity document to someone, I'm trading off some risk. I want to minimize this surface as much as possible. Given that, what are some domain registrars who, 1. Use a portal/service to receive the documents instead of a broad email address where who knows who can have access to it. 2. Have clear and explicit document requirement so they don't play the guessing game asking me to submit one document after another until I'm stripped naked. 3. Have low false positives in their fraud detection where my chances of getting harassed unnecessarily are low in the first place. Please share your experiences with registrars asking you for verification. What documents did they ask for and how reasonable was the process overall? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RuaidhriM · 2023-09-29 21:07 I’ve been asked for a credit card. Nothing more. Sometimes less. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-09-29 21:11 I use name.com as a business and never had to send in anything. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- signed- · 2023-09-29 21:33 What TLD are you registering? Some (especially country TLD) do have kind of things, but a generalist like .com doesn't need more than a CC Try Cloudflare ---------------------------------------------------------------------- detyrant · 2023-09-29 21:48 I think this is true 99% of the time. But if you get flagged by their system for whatever reason or someone tries to claim your domain then the verification kicks in. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-09-29 21:53 Never had to provide ID to get a domain name. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- detyrant · 2023-09-29 21:56 General ones. The thing is they do not do verification by default, only when flagged. Which is good because it minimizes document collection in the first place, but not so good that you can be held hostage to their verification process at some future point in time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jusepal · 2023-09-29 22:05 Its rare I've been asked to provide any sort of documents for kyc. And when they does asked, its on me for forgetting to turn off my vpn. Payment gateway doesn't like proxy, vpn, tor and that kinds of stuff. Always turn them off before doing online payment. That being said, spaceship, porkbun, ovh doesn't ask for documents when i reg. Infomaniak does, maybe because I forgot to turn of my vpn that time but its the most obnoxious kyc process I've ever done. Gotta download a fckin dedicated app and do the kyc there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- detyrant · 2023-09-29 22:43 > Gotta download a fckin dedicated app and do the kyc there Note to self, avoid. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- joecool42069 · 2023-09-29 22:58 what kind of shady things are you doing with your domains OP? HHmmmmmmm.. 0.o ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anarch33 · 2023-09-30 00:23 I get the vibe that they're probably a resident of a US sanctioned country ---------------------------------------------------------------------- detyrant · 2023-09-30 07:05 You are both way off track. If you don't see the concerns in being casual with your identity documents, I don't know where to start. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nxtstp · 2023-09-30 07:47 Never had to prove anything for any of my domains. I mostly use namecheap ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GrumpyCat79 · 2023-09-30 08:31 If you are looking for privacy, go with njal.la and no question asked ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kyle-K · 2023-09-30 12:05 Yeah don't say never for name cheap you should see their sub r/namecheap. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sneakpeekbot · 2023-09-30 12:05 Here's a sneak peek of /r/NameCheap using the [top posts](https://np.reddit.com/r/NameCheap/top/?sort=top&t=year) of the year! \#1: [I’m a customer of NameCheap, and I have received a very strange email from NameCheap about an undelivered parcel. The only time now I have to provide proof of id is for code signing certs... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GrumpyCat79 · 2023-09-30 14:38 Yeah, there's not a lot of option if you don't want to provide info like your name and address. Some registrar offer free "privacy protection" and retract your info from the public whois, but you legally still have to provide a lot of personal info to register a domain ---------------------------------------------------------------------- detyrant · 2023-09-30 15:51 Not looking for privacy because I want to be able to claim ownership on the domain as well. I just don't want to share half a dozen documents when a single one should do. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PsychotherapistSam · 2023-09-30 16:03 There's https://njal.la as long as you don't do shady things with your domains they couldn't care less about who you are. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-09-30 16:14 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- detyrant · 2023-09-30 16:40 Not looking for absolute privacy. I have an aliad domain registred with them, but my main domain is not for the same reasons! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-10-01 18:02 ## Post Removed Hey, detyrant!
