Self Hosted File upload service reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Olejka2k · 2023-09-29 20:32 Hi everyone. My company has a Hetzner server with a docker running on it and we are using GDrive. The problem is that sometimes we have to give our client a way to upload files to us. Google Drive allows that only for registered users and not everyone has Google account (obviously) Now I am searching for a simple service that will allow me to create a link to give to the client and create a separate folder where the files that the client uploads will be put into. My googling shows NextCloud and Filerun, but Filerun is not free anymore and Nextcloud is quite complicated for our needs. Thanks for any suggestions! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dnightbane · 2023-09-29 20:51 Seafile could be an option for this and runs in docker. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MacTheKnife574 · 2023-09-29 20:52 Owncloud is simpler than nextxloud ---------------------------------------------------------------------- borouhin · 2023-09-29 21:07 If you don't need a full-featured private cloud such as Seafile or Nextcloud/Owncloud, only upload, - you may look at [timvisee/send](https://github.com/timvisee/send) \- it's a fork of discontinued Firefox Send. [https://send.vis.ee/](https://send.vis.ee/) is a public service based on this code, you may look at is as the example to decide if it suits your needs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- borouhin · 2023-09-29 21:22 Another option to consider - [Filestash](https://www.filestash.app/), which gives access to your internal storage resources to clients via a simple Web interface. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FroSSTII · 2023-09-29 21:29 You can always go with the good ol, SFTP in combination with any of its many front ends (or just use windows file explorer). A few were mentioned here. Do you have any requirement for the service to authenticate to AD? see as its a corporate environment. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CaffeinatedTech · 2023-09-30 04:33 I've been using Sharry. You can link the backend to an S3 service too if you want. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- leonsk29 · 2023-09-30 06:29 Check this out: https://www.projectsend.org ---------------------------------------------------------------------- panjadotme · 2023-09-30 06:36 [Pingvin share](https://github.com/stonith404/pingvin-share) may do what you need. You can upload your own files or generate a "Reverse Share" to send to others to upload files by link. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ybizeul · 2023-09-30 06:41 I’ve tested multiple ones and settled on sharry. Not the most attractive but works great. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Olejka2k · 2023-09-30 07:14 Thanks for the suggestions everyone, some very nice alternatives here! For now, I've installed pingvin and projectsend, looking good! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ybizeul · 2023-09-30 07:14 Seems to be a really nice project. Only thing that seems to be missing is the ability to send an upload link to someone. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Affectionate-Fig-805 · 2023-09-30 07:16 If you don't need thumbnail view, you can just selfhost an FTP server and use monstaftp for the web based gui. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Olejka2k · 2023-09-30 07:16 Thanks I've been thinking about that, but some of our clients are not very it savvy even for using sftp, so we need good old web page, a "choose file" dialog ue and big upload button. We don't have any corporate heavy security protocols, so login / password should be enough. Looks like projectsend is something we will be using - looks promising! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mr_OpJe · 2023-09-30 07:17 I've created uploadeerr. You can upload through api, webinterface and email. Https://GitHub.com/joepbuhre/uploaderr ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Olejka2k · 2023-09-30 07:17 Thanks I did not know about this one. Will check it out. We have 100gb volume attached to the server, so that's more than enough for us - the data will be transferred to the corporate gdrive after uploading anyway. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CaffeinatedTech · 2023-09-30 07:22 Yay, the interface isn't the prettiest. But the main requirement for me was that you can create a share, and send the link to the client, and they can upload files without creating an account. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Olejka2k · 2023-09-30 11:44 Hi there I've tried to install it, but the docker-compose gives me this failed to deploy a stack: Failed to load /data/compose/22/.env: open /data/compose/22/.env: no such file or directory I am using portainer and stack to install ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mr_OpJe · 2023-09-30 11:56 Hi! Nice of you to take the time. That's unfortunate. Can you send me the docker compose file you're using? I'll check it out immediately. How are you setting the environmental variables? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-09-30 12:31 Nextcloud is very easy for this. Run the docker container. Just disable every app besides files and install the flow uploader plugin. Done. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Olejka2k · 2023-09-30 13:01 I am not sure, but I always had issues installing NextCloud. And I never could finish the installation of AIO - it just never started the proper way. So I decided to go with something else. If you have a good guide for AIO installation to share - I could give it another try. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Olejka2k · 2023-09-30 13:02 I am using the one you have in Github, but without Traefik (it is not installed on my end) version: '3' services: uploaderr: container\_name: uploaderr image: ghcr.io/joepbuhre/uploaderr:latest env\_file: \- .env ports: \- "25:25" \- "8080:8080" \- "8081:5174" Sorry I am kinda newbie here, maybe I am doing something wrong? I am just putting that into Portainer stack and get the error. Other dockers are working fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-09-30 13:04 If you just want a file "service", I'd not use AIO since it comes with a lot of stuff you don't need like Collabora etc. To make it even easier, just install a Portainer container and choose the Nextcloud template install from there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mr_OpJe · 2023-09-30 13:06 No worries. I see what you are missing. The error is from docker compose trying to load a .env file, but you're not supplying it. You could change it a little more like this? ``` version: '3' services: uploaderr: container_name: uploaderr image: ghcr.io/joepbuhre/uploaderr:latest ports: - "25:25" - "8080:8080" - "8081:5174" environment: - APP_PORT= - FRONTEND_PORT= - NODE_ENV= - LOG_ENABLED= - LOG_LEVEL= - LOGGER_NAME= - UPLOAD_PATH= - EMAIL_PORT= - ALLOWED_FROM= - ALLOWED_IP= - ALLOWED_TO= - MODULE_EMAIL= - MODULE_BACKEND= - MODULE_FRONTEND= restart: 'unless-stopped' ``` ---------------------------------------------------------------------- panjadotme · 2023-09-30 14:41 The reverse share feature allows you to do that ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Olejka2k · 2023-09-30 20:38 Thank you, I've installed NextCloud and it looks like it's easy to work with. Thanks for the suggestion. The good thing is that I can automate the files move to Google Drive via n8n. Can you please tell me how can I hook a folder from Google Drive to act as an external storage for NextCloud? Basically Nextcloud upload link will upload files to Google Folder, is that correct? Thank you ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ybizeul · 2023-09-30 21:09 Ah yes you’re right. Really close to what I’m looking for but boy thins things have issues. Straight out of the bat there is no icon upper left hand corner and the container crashed on me when I changed the site name. The author seem to be going over some permissions improvement I’ll keep an eye on it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- emisofi · 2023-10-01 00:53 It is very easy to setup with docker. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-10-01 07:00 I've only federated multiple nextcloud instances but I think the principle is the same, a file you upload to an "external storage" via nextcloud, it gets transferred to the local storage. Once the transfer is done, Nextcloud begins uploading to the external storage. When downloading, Nextcloud downloads the file to local storage and then starts the transfer to the user. With huge files this might not work well, the advantage is that the user has one unified UI and doesn't need to access various services to access the files. Apparently the GDrive plugin has stopped development for Nextcloud but there are several other working methods. https://ostechnix.com/how-to-mount-google-drive-locally-as-virtual- file-system-in-linux/ If you have your GDrive locally mounted, you can create an "external storage" type "local". What is a really nice tool to make external cloud storage "future proof" by unifying the access to it, is minio which supports GDrive (or backblaze, wasabi, glacier etc.pp) backends as well https://min.io/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Olejka2k · 2023-10-01 07:40 Thanks so much for the info, definitely will check it out! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sk1nT7 · 2023-10-01 20:24 Owncloud OCIS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Educational-Craft545 · 2023-10-02 10:37 [filebrowser](https://filebrowser.org/) has user management plus sharing capabilities ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thorntech · 2023-10-03 21:14 Does the storage location have to be Google Drive? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Olejka2k · 2023-10-04 11:57 Not necessarily, it can just be synced. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Olejka2k · 2023-10-04 12:04 So thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I am really glad to be part of this community, thanks so much! So this is the setup I've stopped on: Nextcloud with all the apps turned off, sqlite database. RSync with one way sync to Google drive in a special separate shared folder. (I still have to set it up, though I don't think there will be any issues here) I've found that nextcloud has all the things I need 1. Links generation for a separate folder 2. Upload without register 3. Nice and convenient inelterface 4. I could customize it with our company colors and logo in a minute. 5. Email notifications about uploaded files. Basically this covers all our needs. Again, thanks everyone for your input! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thorntech · 2023-10-04 14:51 The Managed File Transfer section of G2 lists lots of options if you haven't checked it out before: [https://www.g2.com/categories/managed- file-transfer-mft](https://www.g2.com/categories/managed-file- transfer-mft). We have a product called StorageLink that allows you to connect to cloud storage locations on AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud if that's of interest.
