Multipurpose home server reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TallWheel515 · 2023-09-29 18:20 Hi, I am looking to build low power home server for this purposes: - nextcloud - timemachine (Macos backups) - Arr stack - jellyfin (max 4 people) with hardware H265 decoding and h264 encoding - pihole - home assistant (only for testing) I want to use truenas and docker images for individual programs. For the hardware I want to use [ugly Nas](https://github.com/fenio/ugly- nas) . Is this a good approach? Isn't it too much expensive? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-09-29 18:30 Get a Synology NAS to store your *art content and an Intel NUC or similar to run all your containers. Way better setup in terms of usability, ease and upgradeability. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TallWheel515 · 2023-09-29 18:44 But that solution is more expensive and more power hungry right? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-09-29 20:31 Looking at your link, it lists the Odroid H3 which has a Intel N6005 CPU for $USD 165. You can definitely get a NUC, or a NUC-like from brands other than Intel, for around the same price, possibly even with a i3 CPU. Btw this sub here is about selfhosting **software services**, not about hardware build or purchase advice. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nyrosis · 2023-09-29 21:18 My thoughts go to truenas scale or proxmox to run all of that on a single server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lorax-06 · 2023-09-29 23:18 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B083JL2FXC/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_searc h\_asin\_image?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jcmr27 · 2023-09-30 01:40 Unraid is better ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TallWheel515 · 2023-09-30 10:37 I am sorry about misplacing my question. I was asking about the combination of hardware and software, because IMHO one affects the other. I couldn't find any cheaper Nuc (only with older processors) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vinibutturi · 2023-10-02 12:16 That can be done, I have a similar setup but instead of H3+ and 8 480Gb SSDs, I have an H2+ and 2 8Tb HDDs. (I put them to sleep after 30 minutes) I'm running OMV which a bunch of containers (arr stack, plex, overseer, home assistant, nextcloud, and others) it has been running 24/7 for almost 3 years now. Really good performance per power consumption. You might be able to build something cheaper if you buy used business hardware (like some Dell Optiplex, for instance) and tweak it a little bit. It will probably be faster but will also use more energy, so you have to choose between saving on hardware or energy...
