Virtual/Cloud Desktop reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bauerbyter · 2023-09-28 21:40 Hey! I am a Freelancer and often work in big companies with strict firewalls (what totally makes sense) so not even syncthing comes through. But I have notes (with Logseq) and small applications (like timetracking and co) that I need to work efficient. At the moment I am running a mini PC with Yunohost and want to have a VM(or similar) that I can access via Browser. Best would be if I can install it on the same maschine. I red about Webtop but I think its not secure for access through internet (because I cannot use my own VPN on this corporate Laptops) . Is there an easy and secure way to have something like this? Thanks in advance ---------------------------------------------------------------------- superglue_chute115 · 2023-09-28 21:58 Maybe RustDesk? You can self host it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FallenFromTheLadder · 2023-09-28 22:02 You're looking for KASM. If you put it behind a simple HTTP basic authentication I'd say that you will mitigate most of your potential attacking vectors. Obviously HTTPS all the way. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-09-29 01:16 Apache Guacamole? Just put an authenticating reverse proxy in front of it (something like nginx with vouch-proxy or authelia) and then use your Google Account for SSO. And then use a hardware security key as 2FA on your Google Account. Should be decent enough but VPNs will be much better IMO. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-09-29 01:17 Rustdesk likely won't work. If OP has firewall issues, he probably doesn't have permission or capability to install his own software. I don't think selfhosted rustdesk has a web client. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-09-29 01:18 Genuine curiosity, why Kasm over Guacamole? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bauerbyter · 2023-09-29 06:46 Sound good, looked at Guacamole and this is exactly what I was searching for! Thanks. But a noob question: What is the best way to create the Linux Desktop? Just use a Docker Container or do I have to create a VM? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-09-29 07:49 > But a noob question: What is the best way to create the Linux Desktop? Just use a Docker Container or do I have to create a VM? The general rule is: one service per container. A desktop environment is a bit too hefty for a container. Not saying you cannot do it, just that it is not the best idea. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-09-29 12:02 Horizon View VDI, is allowed everywhere and works everywhere. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arcadianarcadian · 2023-09-29 15:05 NPM + Authelia + Webtop NPM + Authelia + Guacamole ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FallenFromTheLadder · 2023-09-29 15:22 Guacamole is fine as well. A little bit different but for OP's usage is not that impotant.
