Cheap Storage VPS Around 5$ Monthly reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Defiant_Country1669 · 2023-09-28 07:26 Hello,I am a newbie android dev.I am just creating mobile stream app to watch videos. So I still searching which is the best for me. 1.Storage VPS 2.Block Storage Or Other Services. I need low lantency service to prevent taking long time. Could you give me some advice and guide plz. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- roman5588 · 2023-09-28 08:16 How much storage for $5? Doubt you will even cover basic network fees for that. Backblaze is pretty competitive if you are just starting out and s3 compatible. Just be careful on copyright as many have tried and been shutdown fast. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Defiant_Country1669 · 2023-09-28 08:26 I already tested b2 storage but it slow even with cloudflare cdn.5$ 250gb(at least).I am still using bunny.net stream. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- roman5588 · 2023-09-28 08:33 Ohh…this might start getting expensive! OVH has a high speed tiers of object and blockstorage which might be worth checking out. Otherwise it’s pretty hard to beat bunnycdn in terms of features and price. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jkirkcaldy · 2023-09-28 08:49 Video streaming gets extremely expensive very quickly. For reference, I work in TV production and I created a web app to view the raw video files so people could view them whilst working from home. If I wanted to store those files on s3 somewhere I’d be looking at thousands per month. And that’s with about 4-5TB. What you have to remember is that storage is relatively cheap, accessing the data is where it gets expensive. You’ll be paying every time someone watches one of your videos. In the end, because we have a dedicated 1GB connection to the office, we decided to host everything internally. But I used a £5 VPS from IONOS to be a reverse proxy so we weren’t opening ports in our firewall. But to answer your question, whilst I’m not sure you’re going to get storage and a VPS for your price, hetzner offer low price VPS and have some affordable block storage too ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Defiant_Country1669 · 2023-09-28 09:02 sry i am confuse.you use 1gb connection dedicated server + 5$ vps from ionos(for reverse proxy).sry i am newbie ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jkirkcaldy · 2023-09-28 09:03 We run the app on a server in our office. All storage is local in the office. We then have a VPS that we connect to with a vpn which serves as a reverse proxy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-09-28 11:05 Industry standard is $6/TB/Month for storage, so you will be hard pressed to find a storage VPS for that price range. But I have a sneaking feeling you are not telling us all of your requirements. Either that, or you are woefully naive. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kamtib · 2023-09-28 11:28 I think for that kind of price, it will be impossible without the reverse proxy and then a good internet connection for the real storage and server at home or office. Other than the previous comment, there is another way to use reverse proxy using Cloudflare tunnel and it is free. You can search for it on Google. In layman's terms, it provides the client access to the server without the server's need for real IP, even with only a mobile data connection, which means as long the server connects to the internet, it can serve the client. But I suggest you should do it as a demo otherwise you probably break the Cloudflare terms. Even though the last time I checked the “media intensive usage,” it was not there anymore. Hope it helps ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Defiant_Country1669 · 2023-09-28 11:31 Thank you for ur info ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zeptiny · 2023-09-28 13:10 I think cloudflare R2 would best suit your needs, as they don't charge for egress nor ingress and it's relatively cheap ($15/TB), and you could use their proxy probably (As long as all the media is hosted on R2) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- computerwiz123 · 2023-09-28 16:38 Have a look at buyvm. They do cheap kvm vps's and you can bolt on storage 'slabs' that should fit quite squarely in your budget. They're pretty good guys over there and quite speedy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheMcRibReturneth · 2023-09-28 19:12 Doesn't exist. You're going to want to self host this locally. Cloud storage is comically expensive. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheMcRibReturneth · 2023-09-28 19:12 Woefully naive. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- worldcitizencane · 2023-09-28 22:18 Cheapest storage for this purpose is probably Hetzner Storagebox, you get a TB for just under $5. Why do you need low latency? Main thing is to get a good flow going, not if it takes 50 or 100 ms to get it started. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- txmail · 2023-09-28 22:32 >$6/TB/Month That is by no means standard. THe SX line at Hetzner proves that number can be lower than $2/month. BuyVM is $5/month. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-09-28 23:27 > That is by no means standard. The SX line at Hetzner proves that number can be lower than $2/month. BuyVM is $5/month. Au contraire. The box you are referring to at Hetzner (SX64) has 64TB of **raw** capacity at ~€1.4/TB/month. Most storage providers (BuyVM, in your example) offer RAID and other redundancy, so it is improper to compare prices for raw storage against prices for storage-as-a-service with all that the latter entails. $5-6/TB/month holds true for most storage-as-a-service providers (hence, industry standard) for the consumer market: your Google Drive, OneDrive, Backblaze, Wasabi etc providers. By all means, you can rent the SX64 for €90/month and run your own RAID. You'll also pay another +€20 for a hardware RAID controller. And that's the other thing. While Hetzner's box is the aforementioned €1.4/TB/month, you are paying a minimum of €90 to get it. Meanwhile OP has an overall budget of $5. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Defiant_Country1669 · 2023-09-29 10:46 how about lantency?when i play video ,some provider take long time to start video ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Defiant_Country1669 · 2023-09-29 10:47 So if 10$ to 20 $? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Defiant_Country1669 · 2023-09-29 10:47 When i play video,it take long time to start. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- worldcitizencane · 2023-09-29 10:58 Define long time. It will always take longer to start from the internet as opposed to from your LAN. I don't think there is much difference between using local storage on the internet and using Storagebox.
