Private / anonymous plex reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bigjoe2019 · 2023-09-27 17:46 Greetings my fellow redditors, I am puzzling the possibility of hosting a plex server, with reasonable privacy / anonymity (from my isp and plex inc). What I have tried: Reverse proxy at home, with port forwarding. Not a big fan - started getting smashed by bots and crawlers on port 80 / 443. Hosting plex in a tiny vps (linode), tailscale back to home network for storage. Works OK, but cost wise quite similar to a dedicated seedbox. Also, money trail leads back to me in terms of payment for the vps. Jellyfin locally behind reverse proxy. Cloudflare dns (and proxy) to my local ip, with WAF rules to block traffic not from my country. Local port forward rules to reverse proxy host ONLY from cloudflare edge ip’s. This felt very nice and secure, however jellyfin clients are a bit of a barrier. No clients for samsung or lg tv’s without jailbreaking tv’s (this is for parents - so jailbreaking not ideal). Also cant get it working on my apple tv with swiftfin since ios17? Any other ideas from the community on how to achieve this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Stetsed · 2023-09-27 18:01 So firstly you cannot get an anonymous plex install simply because plex is proprietary and we don't know what they are doing and with the recent announcement they will be banning people hosting on hetzner they are clearly tracking. Secondly cloudflare's TOS is merky about whether such services are allowed and most people haven't gotten banned however be warned you are operating in the definite gray of the cloudflare TOS. Lastly there is Infuse which also supports apple TV and jellyfin which I know is available on there but maybe check with the swiftfin people about why you can't download it on the Apple TV as it should be possible. Not sure about LG TV/Samsung TV as I have no experience with them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ELKER54 · 2023-09-27 19:16 Just use Jellyfin ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ComprehensiveLuck125 · 2023-09-27 19:46 Putting Jellyfin behind cloudflare in free tier is breaking TOS. Are you looking for ban? Free tier is max 100 MB for HTTP/HTTPS. Take pfSense and expose Jellyfin via haproxy with Lets Encrypt Cert and Suricata IDS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jkirkcaldy · 2023-09-27 19:55 It’s not grey, it’s 100% against their terms. Whether they will ban you for it is another thing. However you can set up your own with a vps, a vpn and a reverse proxy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jkirkcaldy · 2023-09-27 19:59 You can set up your own version of a cloudflare tunnel. Get yourself a vps with a large traffic limit, set up a vpn between your vps and your media server, set up a reverse proxy on the vps. Point your domain at the vps. Jellyfin will be more private, but Plex has more features, some of those features include calling home with an unknown amount of data. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lesigh · 2023-09-27 20:21 Lol. Sounds like you want us to help you setup a paid Plex ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-09-27 21:07 100%. All anon, no tracking, no payment tracking (why payment?). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TinyMicron · 2023-09-27 23:04 Skip Plex and go with Jellyfin
