A Game Streaming Server without mirroring reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Arokan · 2023-09-27 17:11 Hey SH-Sub! I want to play a good round of Baldur's Gate tomorrow with some friends as we do once a week and one of them probably can't make it. He's fine with us recording the show so he's up-to-date with the story. He usually provides his second machine to let another friend stream it over moonlight, so if he's out, he takes another friend with him down the hole. The two remaining people, me and friend no. 3, are Linux-users without second machines and now we're looking for a good solution to this problem. I remember that under windows, if you use RDP, the user logging in gets signet out locally, but another user can still log in, so that effectively two people can use one computer. I imagined something like this for us. Practically, as the title says, I'm looking for a game streaming solution that's a direct stream without mirroring the output so two can play at once off the same machine. The only thing I know of that works sort of like this is X11 forwarding but I don't know whether that would work, whether I'd have to create another user account or if that would be even more trouble. Does anyone of you have any idea about what tool could achieve that? Any sick docker-container that does this out of the box or any setups I could do? It may even be a little more complex, I got tomorrow off! :D Thanks in advance for any hints, guides and recommendations! :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kickbut101 · 2023-09-27 18:55 I thought steam has this built in? (You didn't quite mention what platform you play off of). Where multiple (remote or local) people can play off one local box and game ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Arokan · 2023-09-27 22:52 Afaik, the only thing steam has built in is that you can stream (mirror) games to all sorts of devices. I'm not aware of multiple players being able to play off one box/game oO. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kickbut101 · 2023-09-27 23:06 no there definitely is a way for multiple people to interact with a single game even remotely ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Arokan · 2023-09-27 23:12 Okay, sick! Didn't know that, doesn't quite solve my problem though, as I need two games running on two different steam accounts. :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- carl2187 · 2023-09-28 04:32 Look into hyper-v gpu partitioning. Two instances of windows sharing a single gpu via virtualization. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HrBingR · 2023-09-28 07:37 Was about to suggest a very easy windows fix to this issue but then realised that you’re on Linux. You could potentially use two different versions of Steam served from 2 home directories, one native (yours) and the other flatpak, and use remote play on the flatpak version for your friend. Don’t know if it will work but I’ve run multiple of the same app before using similar methods. Hell, I’ve done it with 3 different instances and accounts of the same flatpak. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Arokan · 2023-09-29 03:49 But doesn't the window need to be open in order for it to work properly? After all, I want to be able to play at the same time as well :D
