Looking for a command and control solution reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hiro24 · 2023-09-27 00:58 I've got around 10 virtual Linux servers and I'd like to find some sort of self hosted solution to control them all from a centralized place. Checking and updating packages, monitoring services, etc. Right now everybody's on debian. Any suggestions? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zoredache · 2023-09-27 01:13 Write and use ansible playbooks? If you want, run them from AWX, rundeck or some other tool like that? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sassdrew501 · 2023-09-27 01:38 In regards to making updates or changes to your server I personally use Ansible to write and configure playbooks in yaml to do my needs. I integrate it with AWX which allows me to run ansible playbooks from it and can schedule things for continuous patching or whatnot. If you decide to go down this route with AWX you will need a repo to store your playbooks in, I use a self hosted gitlab instance to do so, but you could also use Github to store them if you'd like :) As for monitoring services, it depends on the level of monitoring that you would want for your servers. If you're looking more for like is your service up. Uptime Kuma is a good for just monitoring if your service is up or down. If you're looking for more detailed server monitoring ( CPU, RAM, DISK I/O ) I would suggest trying out check\_mk ---------------------------------------------------------------------- justinhunt1223 · 2023-09-27 01:50 I have an ansible playbook for updates, it runs Tuesdays. Between the Windows machines at work and home and servers everywhere, Wednesday is usually the only shit show of a day. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-09-27 02:33 Term you want to search for is 'rmm' or 'remote monitoring and management'. Don't use one myself but Tactical RMM has piqued my interest previously as it uses MeshCentral as the engine for it's remote control side and I'm somewhat in love with that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DigitalHobbyist · 2023-09-27 02:41 I personally use Ansible playbooks. I run them from a pi zero. There is also GUI for Ansible called Anisble-Semaphore. It just lets you create and notify using GUI. [https://github.com/ansible- semaphore/semaphore](https://github.com/ansible-semaphore/semaphore) I use this sometimes mainly when I want to trigger certain playbooks. I can just connect my tab and launch playbooks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _mnz · 2023-09-27 06:15 Just have a look on ansible and saltstack Two different approaches, pick the one which suits you best ---------------------------------------------------------------------- borouhin · 2023-09-27 09:37 Ansible for configuration, Prometheus+Grafana for monitoring. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nashosted · 2023-09-27 10:23 This may not be what you’re looking for but X-pipe is pretty awesome. https://github.com/xpipe-io/xpipe ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hiro24 · 2023-09-27 13:40 So I installed prometheus+grafana, but this feels wayyyy over- complicated for what I'm trying to achieve. Basically I'm just wanting to see at a glance if my systems are up and maybe if pre-defined ports are open and accepting connections. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- borouhin · 2023-09-27 14:01 Yes, Prometheus + Grafana definitely give you much more than this. To begin with, you can install node exporter to all of your servers and get basic monitoring (status, load, CPU, memory, disk usage, network traffic etc.) But if you later want to monitor some specific services - it's highly likely that somebody has already written an exporter for it, and plugging it in will be straightforward. Another alternative is Zabbix, which requires a bit less effort in initial setup, but is less customizable (not that it matters a lot in your use case). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hiro24 · 2023-09-27 14:05 Ok, but in the event that someone didn’t write an exporter…. :) I’ve got a dashboard set up showing a few servers now pulling data from node exporter. I just need to figure out how to monitor ports. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- borouhin · 2023-09-27 14:19 There's a [blackbox exporter](https://github.com/prometheus/blackbox_exporter) for it.
