Google is yet again killing a product - Podcasts - looking for a selfhosted alternative reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shlomip · 2023-09-26 22:28 I'm personally tired of Google repeatedly killing useful products. This time it's the turn of Google Podcasts. Looking for a selfhosted Docker container (if there is one at all). any recommendations? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- codecarter · 2023-09-26 23:11 Nooooooo. I literally use this app to listen to podcast every morning. I hope this isn't true ---------------------------------------------------------------------- XxNerdAtHeartxX · 2023-09-26 23:26 Yes, theyre killing it, but what you failed to mention is that they simultaneously offered a replacement by rolling it into youtube music - which makes total sense from a development and product point of view. Personally though, I use Audiobookshelf for my podcasts too. It even auto-downloads them and acts like both a Sonarr for Podcasts, and a Playback Client for podcasts. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- labs-labs-labs · 2023-09-26 23:28 I switched over to audiobookshelf maybe 6 months ago and am very happy with it. I'm using it for audiobooks (grabbed my stash from years of an audible membership) and podcasts (including a few private/paid membership). I love that I can group my podcasts and it manages (and saves) my downloads as s server instead of just onto my phone. Recommend checking it out... https://www.audiobookshelf.org/ I run it in docker and use the Android client for all of my listening. I've had zero issues with it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shlomip · 2023-09-26 23:29 It's true. Google podcasts will be moved to YouTube music https://9to5google.com/2023/09/26/google-podcasts-youtube-music/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shlomip · 2023-09-26 23:32 It doesn't really matter to me if Google podcasts will be on YouTube music, as a user I can no longer trust such a company. Just look at their history.. https://killedbygoogle.com/ I will look into audiobookshelf ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-09-26 23:40 lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Phynness · 2023-09-26 23:59 Pocket casts is phenomenal. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ScribeOfGoD · 2023-09-27 00:22 You shouldn’t trust them in the first place lol. You’re the product. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shlomip · 2023-09-27 00:24 True. Just like Google Photos ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Electronic_Wind_3254 · 2023-09-27 01:28 Yep. Long-time favourite of mine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-09-27 02:13 Gonic or AudioBookShelf. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Darkchamber292 · 2023-09-27 02:52 AntennaPod. Free open source. A lot of features most apps charge for like offline listening is free. You can selfhost podfetch and then connect to your podfetch instance using AntennaPod. This essentially gives you Desktop/Mobile sync ---------------------------------------------------------------------- moanos · 2023-09-27 05:58 Funkwhale is pretty nice and the docker deployment "just works". You could check the open.audio instance which hosts some podcasts ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zn448sk39 · 2023-09-27 06:40 Do you use anything to automate the grabbing of podcasts? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zn448sk39 · 2023-09-27 06:41 Does it do chromecast? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- subwoofage · 2023-09-27 07:02 I was using Plex for podcasts but it was pretty frustrating honestly. I can hope it has improved but I haven't tested it lately ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shlomip · 2023-09-27 07:06 Yes. I installed it last night, so far 👌 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zn448sk39 · 2023-09-27 07:19 Thanks! I have it setup already for my partner to listen to audiobooks, might as well take my podcasting there as well. Cheers ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iuselect · 2023-09-27 07:27 easily my favourite from a UI/UX perspective. just feels so polished. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pdedene · 2023-09-27 07:27 Plex with the Prologue app is working great for me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- geekonwheel · 2023-09-27 07:44 I use podcast addict and it's really good and free (and a one time fee if you want to support the Dev and get cross device sync) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- light_weight_baby_ · 2023-09-27 07:59 Yep I like this app too! But google makes it easy to save your shit so I switched to their app.. guess I'll switch back lol. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stop_lying_good_god · 2023-09-27 08:29 At this point, I only use their office and search products. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FallenFromTheLadder · 2023-09-27 09:34 I hope that your distrust didn't come from this week's decision but it's from a distant past. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shlomip · 2023-09-27 10:16 Not at all. My personal story with Google actually starts with a loss of thousands of dollars (It's a long story, if you'd like I'll elaborate on it :) They recently announced that they were closing another service, Google Domains. So now I need to transfer some domains. It's just exhausting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zcraber · 2023-09-27 11:10 Castopod: [https://docs.castopod.org/getting- started/docker.html](https://docs.castopod.org/getting- started/docker.html) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Apart_Ad_5993 · 2023-09-27 11:41 This was kind of rumoured for a while. Why maintain 2 apps when you can maintain one that does both. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shlomip · 2023-09-27 12:00 And also has ads built-in.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Apart_Ad_5993 · 2023-09-27 12:01 Not if you're a YouTube Premium subscriber. But ads are literally how the internet works now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- beerpolice · 2023-09-27 13:08 Just an fyi, Pocket Casts does not allow you to make playlists. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CodenameJackal · 2023-09-27 13:22 WTF you can self host Pocket Cast? I have a lifetime membership and didn’t know this was an option ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pacogavavla · 2023-09-27 14:01 PLEASE, can you post a link to their self-hosted server software? I'm having trouble finding it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Phynness · 2023-09-27 14:12 You can't self-host pocket casts. As far as I know, there is no self- hosted podcast solution that has a very good UI. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Phynness · 2023-09-27 14:12 You can't self-host pocket casts. As far as I know, there is no self- hosted podcast solution that has a very good UI. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CodenameJackal · 2023-09-27 14:24 ahh got it. I love PC as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Darkchamber292 · 2023-09-27 18:30 Why is this upvoted? Its not self-hosted... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Darkchamber292 · 2023-09-27 18:33 That's the only app that makes podcasts usable on Plex and its iOS only. Android has cronicle but its bad ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Phynness · 2023-09-27 19:00 Downvote it if it makes you feel better. There are no great self- hosted podcast servers, especially not with as good of a user interface/experience as pocket casts. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Darkchamber292 · 2023-09-27 19:17 There is tho. The one I posted. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Phynness · 2023-09-27 19:25 What does it offer that pocket casts doesn't though? Honest question, I haven't used it. The main reason to selfhost something is because there's a better solution that offers more features, lower cost, more privacy, etc. than the commercial offerings. Self-hosting just for the sake of it is silly, and can become an actual waste of time/money when things don't work perfectly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Darkchamber292 · 2023-09-27 19:37 Pocketcasts is owned by a company that collects data?? Like how are you this dense? They used to sell premium features but I think those may be free now? How do u think they are making money now? They sell that data to make money off you. Why would you risk your privacy when self-hosted options exist? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Phynness · 2023-09-27 20:10 Pretty sure they also make some money from ads as well. >They sell that data to make money off you. >Why would you risk your privacy when self-hosted options exist? And? Of all the parts of my life that I wish to keep private, the podcasts that I listen to is not anywhere near the top of the list. Do you use Google for Internet searches? Do you use Facebook marketplace? Do you watch YouTube? Do you use virtually any social media? Because those companies (especially Google and Facebook) know way more about you than pocket casts ever will. Of all of the cases you could make for self-hosting podcasts (in particular), privacy would be a pretty weak case. If you're bothered by it, you could always make a burner account and access the app via VPN, which would still be a better solution than self-hosting, in my opinion. But as I said, I'm not that concerned about my podcast privacy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Brilliant_Sound_5565 · 2023-09-27 23:58 Yea, they announced a while back that they weren't killing it off and moving it to YouTube music, but it was a good app. I hadn't yet looked around for another alternative although I do have a YouTube premium subscription anyway, but not sure what the podcast experience will be like ---------------------------------------------------------------------- redoubledit · 2023-09-28 14:46 I Like this site. It's just bullshit. 90 % of the "killed" Services just moved to other services or simply were renamed. The amount of actually KILLED and not replaced/renamed services is minuscule. I get, hating on Google is fun but come on... they offer the alternative, move a function to another app and people call it "killing a service". It's getting really old... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sallysensational · 2023-11-15 02:20 I was excited for this, then i realized it doesn't work with android auto, it doesn't automatically sync across devices, and it doesn't have a web based player. It's also not as well organized and streamlined as google podcasts. Not going to work for me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Darkchamber292 · 2023-11-15 02:38 All the things you listed it does have if you self-host podfetch like I said. By itself Antennapod is just a local player with no cloud services. It gives you the option of self hosting the cloud functions like device sync. Also pdfetch is the web-based player. This is meant for selfhosters. Stick to your Google Podcasts ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sallysensational · 2023-11-15 02:53 I'd prefer to self host. I do for most everything else. It just seems overly complicated. I tried it with android auto. it just didn't play anything until I played it on my phone then it started playing on auto. So it doesn't work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sallysensational · 2023-11-15 02:54 I use this for audiobooks and like it. Is there a way to import my OPML file from google podcast takeout? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sallysensational · 2023-11-15 14:43 Also, I don't want to download all the podcasts in my list. I like the ability to see a timeline of all podcasts i'm subscribed to and click the add button to add an episode to my queue. Or just click on a podcast episode, even if i'm not subscribed, and have it stream instantly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sallysensational · 2023-11-16 02:25 how to you connect it to a self-hosted sync app. I installed gpodder on my NAS, but the antennapod app only has two options for sync: [Gpodder.net](https://Gpodder.net), which is dead, and Gpoddersync which requires nextcloud: i'd prefer not to install 10 different services to replace a simple podcast app. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pirateshack486 · 2023-11-29 11:18 I use headunitreloaded to do android auto and antennapod does work with my android auto....and i have a nextcloud instance i run gpodder in to manage syncing, ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pirateshack486 · 2023-11-29 11:19 in antenna pod make sure you click the stream button, also in the settings telling it to autodownload the podcast helps me (though i drive alot where theres no signal....just notice that stream isnt the default in antennapod :) default is download and play, you can change it though
