Different RAM usage on a vm who do i trust? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bambo630 · 2023-09-26 16:05 Im a noob so maybe this is stupid but anyways. How is it possible that every Software shows a different value for the ram and what is the most reliable? i got a little worried when i saw the proxmox graph. I only have nextcloud and openvpn running and im scared i configured it wrong. see pics below: https://preview.redd.it/ri8777gbimqb1.png?width=351&format=png&auto=we bp&s=4ff0d0e587d92fc5195188fe7fb910cd9af6d079 https://preview.redd.it/vrjhpevbimqb1.png?width=773&format=png&auto=we bp&s=4a2e20daad2250ecba5fd8a3363983c255b4d396 https://preview.redd.it/x89o78gcimqb1.png?width=881&format=png&auto=we bp&s=a617d0fb9dbe2205ec7596b263abc5e150d102ed https://preview.redd.it/pjv80bpcimqb1.png?width=658&format=png&auto=we bp&s=1b2e1a650979e22418252656c482c96c9a10c8c0 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hannsr · 2023-09-26 16:22 Proxmox shows RAM usage including cache. Htop shows RAM excluding cache (green) and cache (yellow) separately. So it's pretty normal what you're seeing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bambo630 · 2023-09-26 16:37 damn tysm, this got me pretty confused, im just going to keep everything for now, i think 5gb should be enough anyways. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CTRL1 · 2023-09-26 19:31 https://www.linuxatemyram.com/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bambo630 · 2023-09-26 20:32 Wow, this is so great thanks, finnaly I get it. Linux is crazy ---------------------------------------------------------------------- niceman1212 · 2023-09-26 21:20 Linux is just “honest” :) windows does the same but hides it from the user. Both are good choices but it takes some getting used to. My advice would be to put some monitoring into place and see max RAM usage (actual, no cache) is for the Vm over a week. Set it to that + 1GB in proxmox and you will be fine ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bambo630 · 2023-09-26 21:22 Thanks, I never used windows as server only as OS. Started with a proxmox server at home and trying to understand everything. Monitoring is the next step but I couldn't decide what to use yet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- niceman1212 · 2023-09-26 21:25 Start off simple. NetData Is probably a good choice as it is portable (docker, Linux binaries) and offers good insights into the most important things. However it is quite resource intensive and has a really fine resolution of data so for longer term it’s not the best choice. YMMV
