Can you explain me how to open my homelab to the internet? Stuck at Cloudflare's nameservers reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Deses · 2023-09-26 15:21 Hello, first of all I'm aware that this has been asked / explained hundreds if not thousands of times, but I haven't been able to figure this out. I registered with DuckDNS for a subdomained DDNS (example.duckdns.org) and Cloudflare to get SSL and all that good stuff. My problem is that when I add my URL (example.duckdns.org) to Cloudflare it's asking me to `Replace with Cloudflare's nameservers` but I can't do that with DuckDNS. My setup is an Unraid machine with dockerized Nginx Proxy Manager. I'd love to get some pointers, or an updated guide to what I need to do to get up and running, thank you very much. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnnualOasis · 2023-09-26 15:30 You need a personal domain, not a DDNS service. You can also set up DDNS on the personal domain, in fact I would argue this is best practice, but to use cloudflare you must use a domain you own. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Deses · 2023-09-26 15:49 Alright. I was afraid that was the case. Thanks. Then what is the best practice if I don't want to use a personal domain? In some of the guides I've read they mention to open my ports 80 and 443, and let NPM do the SSL for me, but that seems too easy/simple. Is that secure enough? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnnualOasis · 2023-09-26 15:57 You can do that but remember that you can access only one service per subdomain. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Deses · 2023-09-26 16:24 Yes, that wouldn't be a problem and I'm already doing this locally. qbt.unraid.local heimdall.unraid.local Immich.unraid.local And so on. It would be amazing if I could use paths but I'll live with it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnnualOasis · 2023-09-26 16:27 You listed 3 services. You can only have one of them linked to example.duckdns.org. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FroSSTII · 2023-09-26 16:58 If you are looking to use duckdns for your ssl needs. I would suggest taking a look at SWG from Linuxserver.io https://docs.linuxserver.io/general/swag the guide has really good information about reverse proxies ssl certs as well as step by step on how to get an ssl cert using duckdns. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Plane_Resolution7133 · 2023-09-26 21:42 I’m sure you’re aware, but your homelab is accessible without a ‘proper’ DNS name. Just open your firewall, and you’re good. If you don’t know what you’re doing, I’d suggest using a service like Tailscale or similar. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- oAhT_iAs · 2023-09-26 23:27 I would check out [IBRACORP](https://www.youtube.com/@IBRACORP/)videos. They do a well explained videos on this. Here is a [playlist](https://www.youtube.com /playlist?list=PLOgmFrM3hTGeBivkGFkYYu7KQdDzz8U2z) you can watch to better understand.
