Palaver App question reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- summeremacs · 2023-11-30 15:49 Hi! I have Palaver set for my bouncer and it works really well. But I noticed that when I have it in the background, after a few minutes, it stops updating completely. Is there something I can do about it to keep it in the background for hours and days without it dropping the connection? (It doesn't say it's dropped, it just stops updating but obvs it's dropped or something) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- quartzhearts · 2023-11-30 16:18 iOS restricts background time for apps, but what you could do, if you're using ZNC, is to [install this module](https://github.com/cocodelabs/znc-palaver) and it'll send a push notification on highlights that you set in-app and for your nickname. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- summeremacs · 2023-11-30 17:14 ty! I'll check it out. But other apps like Matrix Elements and other chat apps have pushed text always when I'm in them, also discord. How do they do it when palaver doesn't? That's what I wanna know. Is installing this module the best way to get that? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nawcom · 2023-11-30 22:01 That's the whole point of using an irc bouncer with a mobile client, especially iOS. I guess I don't understand what the issue is. The next time you connect you get a backlog of what you missed, assuming you have that feature enabled in whatever irc bouncer you are using. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- summeremacs · 2023-12-01 05:23 Well, it doesn't disconnect, so when I pull up palaver, I don't get a backlog. It just stops updating the text. That's what I'm saying. I don't have to reconnect at all. 🙃 It just stops updating all of the text on the screen after a few minutes. If I type something, it'll start updating again. But if I don't, it's just like it's doing nothing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Takarias · 2023-12-18 20:58 The IRC protocol doesn't support logs, push notifications, multiple clients... All of that is added by a bouncer that basically 'fakes' it for you. This is because it's ancient - from a time when storage was incredibly expensive and having a full gig of RAM required a budget on the level of governments. Matrix and Discord are much more modern and are fundamentally very different systems, with memory and storage for days.
