I haven't used IRC since mIRC in 1998. Need advice reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Illuminated_Humanoid · 2023-11-14 05:06 Hi, I am looking to get back on IRC to join some open source software discussions. As the title says, I last used IRC in 1998 when I was a Windows 98 user. I now use Linux and I am wondering what is the best client to use? I see a lot of talk about this matrix thing that apparently works for IRC as well that I am not too familiar with other than the buzz behind it. Can someone fill me in? A software that performed like mIRC would be sufficient for me. I enjoyed using that a lot back then. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Loose-Ad3074 · 2023-11-14 05:33 Try hexchat... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Illuminated_Humanoid · 2023-11-14 05:50 Feels close enough. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- avatar_one · 2023-11-14 05:53 My recommendation would be Quassel IRC, honestly found it much better to use than hexchat. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Illuminated_Humanoid · 2023-11-14 05:54 Interesting. I just looked it up, and it does actually look better. I'll try it out and compare the two. Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- avatar_one · 2023-11-14 06:52 Glad I could help! Welcome back btw, and if you're looking to join a quiet and small server, hit me up, I host one in my livingroom server :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Best-Technology-2168 · 2023-11-14 07:06 Envy irc always looking for great friendly new people but also focus on social groups and discussions also has webchat at https://web.envy.chat:9000 and all other content at www.envy.chat also I prefer mirc but people have preference I still think mirc is the go to :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HexagonWin · 2023-11-14 07:37 You can actually use good ol' mIRC32 as well. WINE works perfectly fine for this. You can use the latest version, or, if your server supports unencrypted plain connection, even the version you used back in 1998! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- reercalium2 · 2023-11-14 08:53 Nahh. Only if you want to use it as a bouncer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- marhazk · 2023-11-14 12:13 hexChat + psyBNC .. atleast psyBNC can motivate you again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- verylittlegravitaas · 2023-11-14 12:19 irssi if you want something on the command line. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PlantationCane · 2023-11-14 15:11 On a network I log into it requires a password message for me to send every time . Is there a way to have hexchat send it automatically when I log in? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- masturkiller · 2023-11-14 15:16 [irccloud.com](https://irccloud.com) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Oryx_2568 · 2023-11-14 15:44 The Matrix bridge between it and irc is no longer working. It was OK for a while then it just seemed to buckle at least for Liberchat. I use erc-tls in emacs for irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xanfoo · 2023-11-14 16:57 irssi and birchx were my favorite back in the late 90s early 00s ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-11-14 17:39 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- final_bawse · 2023-11-14 17:49 If you are comfortable with compiling Go code, I run senpai as a client and soju as the bouncer. Their integration is quite seamless. HexChat is also quite good as a client. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- i_literally_died · 2023-11-14 18:01 Hexchat did something super weird where file transfers would completely kill my connection such that a reboot is the only thing that would fix it. Vanilla mIRC was fine. Ended up on Adiirc which is perfect. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scriminal · 2023-11-14 18:39 Irssi is still my go-to ---------------------------------------------------------------------- notanewbiedude · 2023-11-14 19:03 It's quite an unpopular choice but I use chatterino ---------------------------------------------------------------------- geolaw · 2023-11-14 19:43 As many others are saying, hexchat would get my vote. I also use it to grab an occasional file via DCC as it works in that aspect as well. Someone else mentioned mIRC in wine, that also works but I think mIRC will pester you to pay them, hexchat is $0. I used hexchat up until Nov 2022 at work when they switched to slack ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ScratchinCommander · 2023-11-14 23:12 That's actually so cool, now that you mad me think of it, that I could run the same mIRC client I used to use back in the day... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DaftPump · 2023-11-15 03:33 See the --url option in hexchat man page. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lopsided-Ad7396 · 2023-11-15 12:14 WeeChat is another good option, it's slightly more feature-packed than irssi. Also, come join us on [irc.retronode.org](https://irc.retronode.org), please, a place to reminisce the good old days ;) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gunfart · 2023-11-16 14:52 it was called bitchx, a popular fork of irssi ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xanfoo · 2023-11-16 15:29 yah, autocorrect got me ha
