Setting up a private IRC server

Greetings,

I'm looking to set up a private IRC server. The server would require
SSL and would be restricted to certain users only. We'd also like to
log every conversation in text files on the server, if that's
possible.

I'm looking at this daemon to run it: https://www.inspircd.org/

Would that be possible? If anyone has done it before I'd like to hear
how it went. I've some Linux sysadmin knowledge so any config editing
or recompiling is fine with me.

Hoping this is doable and we can use something fun and avoid Teams and
other unmentionable bloatware...

I have done this and currently I manage a private server of a similar
kind (private in a sense that it only allows webIRC connections, only
server admins are allowed to use other clients). I have managed
completely private servers in the past too, as well as completely open
servers.


To log every conversation you would need to tweak the privmsg module
so it logs the convos to a file. And to make the server private, there
are a few ways:
1. Set up a server password
2. Or restrict all connections to the server except its own IP. Then
set up ZNC on the same server and connect to the server using ZNC.


Depending on your use case, you can go with either of these solutions.

Thanks, this sounds like what I'm looking to achieve. I won't need the
server for a few months yet but when the time comes I'll send a PM.

Don't log every conversation unless you make your users 100% aware
that you do so.

Yup, we run this for work. Everything is logged and we also run some
in-house modules to add extra functionality.
