getting started with IRC. I have some questions. reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- philippians_2-3 · 2023-06-08 01:20 recently found an interest in IRC and I'm looking for a client. I checked the link on the sidebar which lists many options but they are too many and its hard to chose one. can anyone recommend a client? it must be free and open source software, be very lightweight, have a GUI and not browser based. also, where can I find a list of channels to join? is there some sort of list with many IRC channels sorted by topic? thanks for your help! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-06-08 02:08 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- physikitty13 · 2023-06-08 06:04 Start off using [HexChat](https://hexchat.github.io/) for a client. You can find channels here: https://netsplit.de/channels/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zestyclose_Ad_9679 · 2023-06-08 13:16 puedes usar el tradicional mIRC, y los ca nales dependiendo la red en la que entres, la mas conocidas son Undernet, chatzona, etc etc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thischildslife · 2023-06-08 20:29 Try snoonet, it's reddit centric! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sky1ark3 · 2023-06-08 22:24 First what os do you use? I have linux and also have crossover office installed for some windows programs. I actually use a really old windows irc program called excursion which is awesome that works perfectly in a I think a xp bottle. It has some really good scripts and interface for accessing and hosting servers to get files. the stuff nowadays doesn't even come close in my opinion. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- philippians_2-3 · 2023-06-08 23:37 i use Linux as well, thanks for the suggestion! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sky1ark3 · 2023-06-09 00:51 Which one? I have mint. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- philippians_2-3 · 2023-06-09 04:42 NixOS and sometimes Arch ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IBNash · 2023-06-10 11:11 IRC is great for conversations and support around open source software. IMO, even a crusty old IRC'er like me admits Discord is better for building communities. With this in mind, use Hexchat and connect to [Libera.chat](https://Libera.chat), there are hundreds of OSS channels with lots of users. Good starting point, before you connect to multiple networks. Using any IRC client, you can type `/list` in the server window to get a list of all channels. On some like [Libera.chat](https://Libera.chat), you can use `/msg alis list` [Netsplit.de](https://Netsplit.de) is a HTTP list of Networks / Channels. Have fun! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kat_cc · 2023-07-13 00:05 Hexchat gave me issues on windows so I've been using Pidgin and have had a pretty good experience. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hanoldbuddy · 2023-07-15 00:56 Try weechat?
