Is there an invisible mode in IRC, such that you can to join a channel
and not appear when other users of the channel list the names?

There sometimes is, depending on the daemon used, but is only useable
by IRCOps.

Depends on the ircd. Sometimes it’s a per user thing (typically only
usable by opers). Sometimes there is a mode where joins are “delayed”
until a user speaks in the channel (so anyone can join and just
invisibly watch without participating). Other times there is no such
feature.

In general, being able to spy on chats (which is what this feature
allows) is ethically questionable and I would suggest that it not be
used, and would even say it should be outright disabled in server
config.

I deleted the InspIRCd module for an oper to join a channel secretly
from contrib several years ago for privacy reasons and even if someone
still has a copy its not compatible with modern versions because of
API changes. I don’t think anyone else has ever supported it.
