Client that simultaneously supports both PC and Android? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theobv3ousthrowaway · 2023-04-06 19:24 Basically searching for an irc client (preferably free) that I can use simultaneously on both PC and Android. Is there a client that will allow you to stay connected & inactive without disconnection on both devices? Looked into IRCCloud and it seems tempting despite the two hour inactivity factor. As a semi-new user, I figured I'd ask here first. Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nawcom · 2023-04-06 19:32 That's what IRC bouncers are for. Most popular: https://wiki.znc.in/ZNC I run mine from a FreeBSD VPS but as long as the port you decide to use is forwarded and accessible from the internet, you can run it off a computer at home that you leave running 24/7. You could run this from a Raspberry Pi if you wanted to. If Linux or *BSD isn't your thing, it can also run on Windows through cygwin or WSL, but you'd want it to be left running and online if you want a functioning server while you're gone. I'd personally recommend not to run this on Windows as running it from a Linux distro is simply easier. Definitely appreciate that! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dpflug · 2023-04-06 23:42 There's also [Quassel](https://quassel-irc.org/) and [Quasseldroid](https://quasseldroid.info/). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OptionalKarmotrine · 2023-04-06 23:54 Weechat is what I use. I run Weechat on a server and then set up the Android weechat client to connect over an SSH tunnel to the existing client. That way things stay in sync better than via a bouncer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dirtyskeme · 2023-04-07 16:52 U can install quasselweb too https://hub.docker.com/r/bodsch/docker- quassel-web ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paradox · 2023-04-07 17:15 You can use a bouncer to do this. [ZNC](https://wiki.znc.in/ZNC) is the most popular. [Quasse](https://quassel-irc.org/) is a different take on the bouncer, where you have a special client that logs into your Quassel server, and the server logs into IRC. Has certain advantages, like more seamless scrollback and so forth. A variant take on this is [irccloud](https://www.irccloud.com/), which is probably the "best" if you just want something turnkey that works with minimal fuss. It has good push notifications, a good web client, and excellent mobile clients ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dfvtv · 2023-04-08 19:16 What's the IRC Cloud inactivity factor? Have used it across 4 devices for several years now with no issues.
