Unable to download in any other clients except mirc reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RatherNerdy · 2023-03-28 20:28 hexchat, pidgin, etc. I can request a file and get the file to show up in "transfers", but the transfer never executes - it just sits there. However, in mirc, the file will start downloading almost immediately. Can anyone point me in the right direction? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- digwhoami · 2023-03-28 21:27 Unless you're trying to grab some sort of really unique content that only exist in someone's fileserver on a random IRC network+channel, you are wasting time. Regardless tho, setting up a modem+router combo in 2023 when behind a NAT setup, isn't necessarily straightforward for people that won't take their sweet time understanding what goes behind the scenes in a DCC transfer, just like it was in early 2000s. If mIRC works, try and replicate its DCC related settings into your other clients I guess. OT, but I have a feeling people asking about all things DCC in this sub were either born in the wrong timeline or are being mislead. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nawcom · 2023-03-29 02:25 You need to know which port number you're forwarding to your client through your router's NAT. mIRC supports [UPnP](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Plug_and_Play) while apps like HexChat don't by default. Pidgin def not. Anyways there's a chance you might have this featured enabled in your router which is why and how mIRC is triggering a port forward to your computer's LAN IP address without you having to configure things. FYI UPnP is generally insecure and you should NOT use it, but rather configure your router's DHCP settings to reserve a specific IP address for your computer to have assigned to it whenever it's connected, and also manually set up port forwarding for the port number you wish to use with IRC DCC to that specific IP address. Hopefully you understand the basics of the terminology I'm using here or else it sounds like you have to gain some more knowledge about home networking. I can relate to the other comment here - I haven't pirated from IRC since dialup days, which meant no dealing with routing/port forwarding involved with that. Man, I remember spending weeks downloading individual stuff like low resolution divx movies and various apps and games. What takes seconds to minutes now took days to weeks back then. I had the privilege of living in a house where a separate phone line was used for dialup internet and faxing so I didn't have to disconnect every time someone wanted to use the phone or was expecting a call. However that didn't stop the random disconnects i'd get, which meant having to start the file download all over again through IRC DCC. fun times Anyways, I agree that in 2023 there are better places to get pirated stuff from other than IRC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jefrendraehd · 2023-03-29 11:01 Might have needed to enable auto-accept dcc transfers ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SqualorTrawler · 2023-03-29 19:41 You may have to manually accept a DCC transfer or configure it to auto-accept. Auto-accept is often disabled on IRC clients for security reasons; you don't want people randomly beaming files to you.
