IRC daemon / server reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iM4tt · 2023-03-08 11:28 Hello guys, just retured to mIRC to feel some of the nostalgia that was alive back in the days. I was wondering if there are any other g33ks that would like to setup a network and play with bots and stuff? I curently have a vps on linode and running my own server at home with decent fiber optics line and good uptime. It\`s just to fool around a bit, link servers and other stuff, just to get the "old" feeling back when it was cool to "PWN". If any of you are willing to do the same, feel free to text me on libera chat -> #Slovenija. My nick is t00r or shoot me a msg on reddit. BG, Matt ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hooogan · 2023-03-09 08:33 What servers/chans did you frequent back in the day? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fishfacecakes · 2023-03-09 09:05 Need enough critical mass to make it worth it I reckon - I tried for a few years, got the network, distributed boxes, services, etc. but it just never really went anywhere. Once discord became a thing it became increasingly harder to attract folks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iM4tt · 2023-03-09 10:10 I do agree with you, but i would prefer it just for the giggles and fun. It\`s all about the challenge.. to setup everything up and to "play" with it.. takovers and stuff :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iM4tt · 2023-03-09 10:11 Most of the time only ircNET. I did start to play with own servers, had some lads back than who joined and we made some botnets too.. it was fun! :D What about you? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gunfart · 2023-03-09 10:28 I feel you on that. I do this from time to time, setting up IRC networks with no users just because I can. A fun challenge is setting up CService from Undernet, it is an absolute royal Fuckery bitch to get working, but when it does work, it is really really super cool! I currently have a few unrealIRCD instances running on a couple of my virtual machines, the domain I have tied to it is blackbawks.org. If you would like, you can connect with me and we can do all sorts of old-school IRC stuff for fun ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iM4tt · 2023-03-09 10:52 Damn!!! I\`m down for it right away! I have 2 server running too, and we can connect them and do some shananigans xD See you on IRC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gunfart · 2023-03-09 10:56 Cool. I am actually in a hospital right now, but as soon as I get out and back to my desk I will shoot you all the details ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iM4tt · 2023-03-09 11:00 Oh, how can i connect to your irc server? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iM4tt · 2023-03-09 11:02 Oh, I\`m sorry to hear that! Hope you\`ll get better soon! Shoot me a msg when your well! All the best wishes to you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iM4tt · 2023-03-09 11:07 if you wish, you can connect to my server -> [irc.t00r.eu](https://irc.t00r.eu) and join #t00r and we can have a chat if you wish. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gunfart · 2023-03-09 11:15 Had to go and make sure my DNS entries were still correct. irc.blackbawks.org There is pretty much no clients on it right now, and I am not able to jump on IRC because I am currently in a hospital. I will have to get back to you whenever I get home, which hopefully should be later today ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iM4tt · 2023-03-09 11:25 Tried to connect, but theres no resolve for the domain xD Ok, catch up to you later! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iM4tt · 2023-03-09 11:30 Damn, tried to link 2 servers together and just can\`t get without this error: \-irc.t00r.net- link.LINK\_ERROR\_MESSAGE \[error\] Error from hub.t00r.eu: Closing Link: irc.t00r.net\[192.168.1.16\] (Link denied (No link block found with your server name or link::incoming::mask did not match)) And the configs are done all right, the names are ok, the mask is \* so i dunno why it doesnt work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gunfart · 2023-03-09 11:36 I am willing to bet your configs are not correct. ;) According to the error message you provided, there is no link block added to the server you were trying to link. Also, the IP address is showing up as a local IP and not an external one. You might want to check into that too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iM4tt · 2023-03-09 11:46 AH.. you are totaly right xD i bought the domain [t00r.eu](https://t00r.eu) after i made the configs, which i wanted to be the main domain [t00r.net](https://t00r.net) xD Daaaamn... got the link up now.. hurray :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Emergency-Sample269 · 2023-03-09 12:28 Sounds fun! I’ll check it out! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iM4tt · 2023-03-09 12:52 You are always welcome! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hooogan · 2023-03-09 21:35 Webnet and MuggleNet! Where is your server located? And what IRCd is it using? I've been thinking of playing around with IRC again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iM4tt · 2023-03-09 21:39 Servers are located in Slovenia ang Germany, but i can build them up all over the world hence linode. The link is: irc.t00r.eu and running unrealircd, but im ready to try any other daemon. Back in the days I was playing alot with ircnet daemon. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MrTrip · 2023-03-09 21:49 If you ever hit up MSN IRC servers I'm running an Exchange server for fun, irc.digitallyevolved.net is up and rolling if you want to poke at ircx. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ManiaGamine · 2023-03-10 23:06 Oh man I still have an old RH9 VM with that setup on it that I ran ages ago and a whole bunch of other stuff from that era. I always wanted to kind of replicate the early UnderNet days just for fun but as far as I was aware Uworld (The oper service) was never actually released, even the CService/X/W wasn't released until some time after it had been retired. I always loved how it worked independently of registered nicknames. Though with dynamic IPs it was at times hard to keep users access working. Luckily I've kind of always had access through some means or another to a static IP so it didn't affect me that much. Oh man I miss those days. I'd love to set something like that up again one day for fun. Would love to find the old Uworld as well if anyone has it. Wildthang are you out there? Fancy a release? hint hint wink wink nudge nudge! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gunfart · 2023-03-10 23:37 Gnuworld and the cservice site has always been available because it is all open source. I believe I still have copies of those on my laptop at home, but unfortunately I do not have access to my laptop at the moment because I am not at home. If I recall correctly, it also requires a specific version of PGTCL, and I forget which database engine, but it needs specific versions of those. I also have a document that I wrote years back with step-by- step instructions on how to properly set up the services and get them working right. I am very tempted to do this again just for fun. I do remember that it is a total bitch to get working, but once it does work it is really awesome! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ManiaGamine · 2023-03-11 01:27 GNUworld is not the original X/UWorld. It was built to replace the aforementioned original "CService" (X/W) of the old days. It is actually a core framework that includes both the channel and oper services. But awhile after that was released (And yes as you said it is open sourced) SeKs released his original X/W channel services but Wildthang never released the original Uworld oper services. Edit: Also, it's worth noting that none of these services actually build/compile on modern compilers as is so if you do ever want to attempt it you'll have to find older versions of distros back from the day or you're going to be making much greater headaches for yourself. I mean you could always fix the errors to get them compile but it is far easier in most cases to just find copies of an older distro that was around during that era (Such as what I did with downloading the RedHat9/shrike) ISOs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gunfart · 2023-03-11 03:28 Oh word. I remember when W made its debut but didn’t get into playing with the services until years later. If I recall correctly, I used either Cintas six or seven, I think it may have been six that I used but it has been a hot minute. I just know that I have built those services and gotten them running so many times, I can literally do it blind. Because I am! :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ManiaGamine · 2023-03-12 09:18 Haha yeah funny enough W was only added because they wanted to split performance and add some redundancy. Though they never as far as I can tell got far with the redundancy features. You can see signs of them working on it, like a mechanism for X to jump in if W went down or W to jump in if X went down but I don't recall it ever actually working. I loved old school UnderNet. I'm tempted to fire up a VM with it for fun. But I already run two networks for fun. An Unreal/Anope and a bircd (P10 like IRCd like old school IRCu) and srvx. Which is also a really good suite of services. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iM4tt · 2023-03-15 15:37 u/ManiaGamine you wanna maybe join networks? Or are you running it solo? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iM4tt · 2023-03-15 15:40 u/Hooogan i saw you joined librechat? Try connectin to [irc.t00r.eu](https://irc.t00r.eu) or [uk.t00r.eu](https://uk.t00r.eu) \- they should work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ManiaGamine · 2023-03-16 00:40 I wouldn't be against it, but in terms of linking I'm not sure. My main self-run network (I run a few) has been going for over 9 years with services so I wouldn't really want to drop that which would be standard if I were to join up at least using that server with another network. That's currently running Unreal and Anope.
