New to using mIRC reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CoverBoring2374 · 2023-02-04 07:34 Hi all I am new to using mIRC. I really want to use it, but I see there are tons of servers, some dead than others. Does anyone know which severs are still popular and cater to talking about anime, tech, and or just regular conversation? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IvyCainTS · 2023-02-04 07:57 Here is 2 good irc search engines you can use to search for things then find out which servers / channels they are hosted on. sunxdcc . com xdcc . eu This website is specifically for Anime xdcc . anidex . moe And this server doesn't always show up in results but is very good for stuff of various kinds. irc. SceneP2P. net Happy IRC'ing :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CoverBoring2374 · 2023-02-04 08:10 Can I ask you something is mIRC very inactive these days? O tried connecting to certain various servers under the varying lists of options to join using for example [libera.chat](https://libera.chat). I tried interacting with people but nobody replied. But it seems a lot of people were online, since I can see their names on the right side. Unless does that mean they are not online? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IvyCainTS · 2023-02-04 08:24 IRC is more a direct message system. Depending on which server you are on, for example, if you were on Undernet, you will see one or twochannel ops with a @ at side of their name, then most of the users as just white normal text, sometimes there may be a few that are known as voiced. On other servers they are run a bit differently, and depending on the type of channel you are in will depend on how they are structured. But for normal chat channels, main window tends to be quiet or lots of spam text and most send instant messages to each other, but always worth chcking channel rules to make sure that's allowed. But in answer to your question, unless it's a channel for downloading something, then if you see a user on the right then they are online, but that doesn't mean they are there at the keyboard, but they are online. Also: if you ever need an updated servers list for mirc, you can get the latest servers.ini file from here: mirc. com/servers.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-02-04 14:29 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SqualorTrawler · 2023-02-04 19:17 It used to be that people were physically present at terminals earlier in its life (up until the middle-to-late 90s or so) so if you saw a person sitting in a channel, they were probably actually there at the keyboard. They might have wandered off for a sandwich but likely were coming back. What happens now is people log in and just don't log off since we all have "always on" connections. On Libera, the most active channels are probably the big support channels for things like Linux distributions. If you see a list of names on the right side of your screen, it means those people are logged in and connected, but it doesn't mean they're anywhere near their keyboards. Finding activity takes some work, but it's out there. A project we might seek to undertake at some point is to identify active IRC channels and start making a list since as you point out much of IRC is quiet. Have a look at: https://netsplit.de And click the channels link at the top. This will search for channels across many, many IRC networks - not just Libera. You might start your search there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Platypus_Grand · 2023-02-05 01:58 most channels are inactive it takes about 30 channels to stay entertained on irc these days, i suggest joining rizon, there are various active channels on rizon, my channel is #chatters it’s fairly active ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CoverBoring2374 · 2023-02-05 05:45 I am joining! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LAGameStudio · 2023-03-05 22:46 Freenode's best programming resources have moved over to Libera : https://web.libera.chat/
