IRC question reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- __ambition__ · 2023-01-02 01:32 Trying to get into IRC and I have heard that your IP is public or can be viewed easily. Is this true or an issue? If it is how do I get around this or fix it. I know very little as far as this topic is concerned and would love to be caught up to speed or just any help at all. Sorry if there is already a guide for this I couldn’t find anything for this specific topic. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IvyCainTS · 2023-01-02 01:46 Some IRC servers hide it, others don't, but, IRC is classed as a chat service not a downloading or streaming service. So having your IP show up on IRC is no different than going to discord or telegram or any other chat / messaging service. 99% of the time you are either downloading from an XDCC bot or a person sharing files by omenscripts or something similar. I've been using IRC over 20 years now and never had an issue. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-01-02 02:00 You can use a tool like znc ([https://wiki.znc.in/ZNC](https://wiki.znc.in/ZNC)) to run a "bouncer", and then the IP that shows up in IRC will be the IP of your bouncer. There are also services like IRCCloud ([https://www.irccloud.com](https://www.irccloud.com)) that will host a web based IRC client that acts as a proxy between you and the IRC network. You can run a znc bouncer on a free tier cloud instance on ec2, digital ocean, or others. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ManiaGamine · 2023-01-02 02:39 Potentially yes, generally no. IP cloaking is standard and common on most networks, very few do not have and use this by default. Which means your IP is effectively masked to anyone who is not an IRC operator at the server level. E.g not channel ops. But the way the IP is masked means an IP will always translate to the same mask (unless you use a custom vhost) which allows things like bans to still work as expected. If you are using DCC however that will expose your IP as you are establishing a direct connection to someone and they will then get your IP. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- caffeinedrinker · 2023-01-02 04:30 znc is also badass you can easily self host an instance too :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Rocket5kates · 2023-01-02 05:00 Everyone has pretty much covered all of the bases on this. (quite impressively, I might add!) One other option you may have is using a wingate or proxy to connect to the server. Most scan for these, so you may have to get fancy. Some IRC Networks offer vhosts, as well as mask your IP from a simple /whois command. There are a few ways to hide your IP address. One of the most common is a VPN, there are plenty of VPN providers and they work on a multitude of OS's. Another way is a BNC. this is a bouncer that allows you to bounce your IP address, as well as set a vhost. Another way is a socket proxy. All are decent ways to hide your IP address on IRC, the most easiest is potentially a VPN. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IBNash · 2023-01-02 18:38 Setup ZNC on $5 VM in the cloud to hide your real IP. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ComputerTech312 · 2023-01-02 23:55 The majority of IRC Networks have cloaking enabled by default, you can check if the Network has cloaking enabled by simply connecting and then use '/whois yournickhere' and if the hostmask is cloaked, it'll be mixed up letters and numbers, but you can still see your own IP with '/whois' (Note: the IRCops of any network may view your IP, even with cloaking enabled) Or you could try one of the following options: - Use a free tier VPS and run https://wiki.znc.in/ZNC on it. - Use a ZNC from one of the following providers: https://wiki.znc.in/Providers (Note: the admins of these providers can see your IP) - Connect to IRC with a normal VPN. Hope this helps. 👍 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iamfoxy420 · 2023-01-04 01:37 It just depends on what network you decide to join. networks like efnet and undernet do not mask your ip when you first join. Undernet does mask ip's of registered users who use /mode +x. networks like rizon, irc-nerds, technet and freenode mask your ip once you join their networks. The only people who can see your ip is staff/ircop of those networks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-01-14 22:12 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RudeBlueJeans · 2023-10-22 01:41 Efnet is full of criminals.
