Old IRC Networks? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BrothasOnline · 2022-12-30 23:15 With a quick google search, you can see a lot IRC is DEAD lol. I've been away, but it's always in you :). I just recently purchased a old irc network (a0hell) I had ircop in. Was wondering if there is any other old IRC networks that people remember that are no longer with us. Another one I remember is Framper, although that was more private :P. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scriminal · 2022-12-30 23:36 Efnet4lyfe ---------------------------------------------------------------------- girthfingers · 2022-12-30 23:38 This is the way. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deepend_tilde · 2022-12-30 23:50 Newnet here ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deepend_tilde · 2022-12-30 23:52 Is it the same aohell that was linked To newnet back in the day ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BrothasOnline · 2022-12-31 00:37 haha I think so, there is only one a0hell that I know of :o. The fact I even heard of it seems very familiar. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zeamp · 2022-12-31 01:38 op me ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BrothasOnline · 2022-12-31 01:41 you ever join the network? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- idealevil · 2022-12-31 02:07 Former Newnet admin here. Used to help run aohell.org and hellsouth.net back in the day. Also was on the coding/services crew. Been quite a while since I've heard mention of it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deepend_tilde · 2022-12-31 02:16 Nice. Is always nice to see people around. I was never anyone important on Newnet. It was just my first irc experience when I was younger and just wanted to keep it going. So more of a nostalgia thing for me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- idealevil · 2022-12-31 02:20 That's great, always cool to see another enthusiast keeping IRC alive. I run a small server on a private network still. IRC was the first 'chat' medium I really enjoyed in the early days of the internet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-12-31 02:25 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deepend_tilde · 2022-12-31 03:02 Yeah. I’ve gone completely back in the way I use the internet. I run newnet. As well as a service called tilde club .. so that covers most Of the way I used to use the internet. Also run a BBS. Cuz why not lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deepend_tilde · 2022-12-31 03:12 Now that is how things were back in the day. There’s always one ;) Lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EmDeeEm · 2022-12-31 03:18 Dalnet all the way ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ComputerTech312 · 2022-12-31 05:02 Quite a lot of the big old networks are still around: Rizon, EFnet, QuakeNet, Dalnet, [Libera.Chat](https://Libera.Chat)(formally freenode), Undernet, IRCnet and probably a few others i guess. IRC isn't dead really imo, just a little bit more quiet, but since covid, i personally see a rise in the amount of users returning, and even younger people joining it(including myself). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hemingray · 2022-12-31 06:56 I'll go in order from when I started on IRC at 15: KidsWorld KnightNet Outsiderz ...and countless private nets, including one I linked up with mid-2007. (To which I still have the physical server for sitting under my desk) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tavaryn_t · 2022-12-31 09:00 FFChat rip 🫡 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheDemeisen · 2022-12-31 12:08 netgamers is no more. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SouthernIcelion · 2022-12-31 14:43 How about that ones.... Could need tons of support too: irc.rizon.net - port 6697 - channels #chatfriendly #townsquare #computertech #nerds irc.irc-nerds.net - port 6697 - channels #nerds or irc.technet.chat - port 6697 - channels #computertech ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LameBMX · 2022-12-31 16:09 I would if I was op ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LameBMX · 2022-12-31 16:11 Was on a lot of little nets through the years. Now it's basically libera.chat and another small one. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tubbo · 2022-12-31 18:56 gamesnet, the undisputed king of counter-strike 1.6 esports :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deepend_tilde · 2022-12-31 20:15 realistically if you look at the stats .. for example [netsplit.de](https://netsplit.de) which tracks around 300000+ IRC users. The biggest issue with IRC is there is too much consolidation of users to a couple large networks and the smaller networks new or old rarely see a piece of the pie. I don't consider 300000+ users dead. Only thing with those numbers is it doesn't separate out bots and probably includes users from other platforms due to some servers using software like pylink. So I guess we really don't know the extent IRC is dying. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Wahnfriedus · 2022-12-31 20:18 Um... I loved sexnet! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- encKes_trek · 2022-12-31 22:40 oh this takes me back. i had a serious DTV & Dishnet hobby fueled by IRC chat of 12 years or so. hung in there as it started to die. those were great internet times The big 3..... EFnet, Freenode & DALnet ---------------------------------------------------------------------- encKes_trek · 2022-12-31 22:42 there ya go .... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SadieCat69 · 2022-12-31 22:45 Most of the old smaller networks have gone and have been replaced with newer networks. Back in ye olden days I was on MacSpeak/MoofSpeak, WyldRyde, and Tech-Touch all of which are now dead. No idea what happened to them. That's just what happens with small networks I guess. When people lose interest they stop paying the server bills and the networks vanish. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RonDiaz · 2023-01-03 20:09 I remember spending a lot of time in #macstuff on NewNet; made a couple life long friends there ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deepend_tilde · 2023-01-03 22:33 Mac stuff. I assume macintosh stuff? :) Did it move to another network or Did it just die off over the years ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RonDiaz · 2023-01-03 22:53 Aye to the best of my knowledge it died off; I have some recollection it moved networks, but I think that was when it moved to NewNet from somewhere else. Somewhere on a buried firewire hard drive I should have some HTML, I hosted a website for them for a period of time maybe \~2003. It may have some details. There are a handful of folks that are still around on #macfilez on EFNet ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deepend_tilde · 2023-01-04 22:43 Well you should come and recreate it lol :) I bet that archive would be interesting to see. Nice when stuff like that gets saved. Sure wish I kept more from way back then. Most I have is my memory of things. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rockintheairwaves · 2023-01-05 02:57 Glad to see newnet still around. I inherited #lobby there from mysty when she disappeared from IRC. We had that for a number of years IIRC then it got forbidden and redirected to another channel last I saw. I was friends with SweetViv who was an IRCop there back in the day. Met her and her husband at a hamfest in Georgia. She passed away a few years back though. Ah the good ol days. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deepend_tilde · 2023-01-05 16:16 If your talking current. I think I did redirect #lobby. But that was more to put users in the channel that is currently in place for what I think #lobby would have been back in the day. However if someone were to want to start that channel again I’d totally remove that forward. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SilverWinter1110 · 2023-01-07 00:18 I loved KidsWorld! There was my first IRC experience too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hemingray · 2023-01-07 00:54 Depending on when you were there, you may know me 😮 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SilverWinter1110 · 2023-01-07 15:47 I was there from around 2000 - 2003. I was 12 - 15. I was a helper and then a network monitor, but by the last time I visited, it had completely died out and was no longer busy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hemingray · 2023-01-07 15:57 I was there 99-02. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GGonJR · 2023-01-15 08:15 No idea what you're talking about. I've used IRC since the early 90s and still do today. Plenty of people on it. Libera is probably the best place to find tech support for almost anything. Efnet still hops too. FreeNode is the twitter of irc nowadays (Elon lite story but oddly parallel). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 8ackto19eight4 · 2023-03-05 00:45 Undernet ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xanfoo · 2023-04-08 17:10 Chatnet.org ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Soul64 · 2023-07-19 22:17 Unless i can’t remember correctly i was a mod on sexnet But i was also a mod on a Bondage server lol
