Can my ISP block me from accessing IRC networks? I need help reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nervous_Stuff102 · 2022-11-28 23:17 Hey so I'm fairly new to IRC and can't seem to understand it as well as I'd like to. I've tried some IRC clients like pidgin, hexchat and thelounge but none of them seem to establish a connection with a network. I always get the same error: "connection timed out". I've double checked everything, from ports to hosts to reinstalling but I've found no solution. Can my ISP be the problem? Is there a solution for the error? Thank you Update: It was my ISP lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- m1ss1ontomars2k4 · 2022-11-28 23:29 Yes, they can block outgoing port 6667 and 6697. This happened to me way back in the day at a place where I was doing summer research. Usually, it's done to prevent botnets from communicating over IRC. You can use VPN or something to get around it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SadieCat69 · 2022-11-28 23:49 What network are you trying to connect to? Some networks (e.g. [Libera.Chat](https://libera.chat/guides/connect)) offer alternate ports for people who are behind firewalls. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nervous_Stuff102 · 2022-11-29 00:10 OverTheWire and SmashTheStack. I also tried to connect to Rizon, IRC4Fun, Snoonet etc but it just won't work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tavaryn_t · 2022-11-29 00:35 If you’re on Windows, open a command prompt and run “telnet irc.whatever.net 6667”, and again with 6669. If just a cursor appears like it’s waiting for input, the ports are not being blocked by your ISP. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zeamp · 2022-11-29 04:20 네 Yes ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Equal-Jelly-3543 · 2022-11-29 05:47 Telnet is on linux too ---------------------------------------------------------------------- swirleyswirls · 2022-11-29 16:18 Iirc, IceChat makes it easier to change the ports. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- defoj10 · 2022-12-07 07:28 And slightly older versions of Mac OS X ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nshire · 2022-12-12 00:43 >Update: It was my ISP lol This really bothers me. IRC is already dying, we don't need outside entities choking it off either.
