Can an isp see how much I download from an irc reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neil_bateman · 2022-10-24 17:19 As stated above I wanted to know if my isp can see how much I download from an irc. I plan on downloading some large files so I wanted to know if they’ll be able to see that ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Treyzania · 2022-10-24 17:55 Of course ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dvfxtv · 2022-10-24 18:31 They see everything... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KindOne · 2022-10-24 18:37 Plain text IRC connection? They can see everything sent to and from your client. SSL/TLS IRC connection? They can only the IP/domain you are connected to and a bunch of encrypted traffic. Each DCC connection creates a plain text connection. Your ISP can easily tell what files you are downloading and can copy them as you download. If the file is encrypted then they only have the encrypted file. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ByGollie · 2022-10-24 19:46 They can see, Yes Do they care? Unlikely ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tavaryn_t · 2022-10-24 21:54 To add to this, they can also see the port number you’re connected on. This will often give away what you’re doing with the connection. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- frostcyborg · 2022-10-24 23:27 So DCC connections are unencrypted even on an encrypted IRC connection? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KindOne · 2022-10-24 23:41 DCC is a separate connection. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 4reddityo · 2022-10-24 23:44 Sounds like a VERY fishy question. I wouldn’t touch this with a ten foot pole. Sounds like law enforcement might wanna know perhaps. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NekoArc · 2022-10-24 23:54 Yes they can since it's done via plaintext. Back when I used to do it, I'd shell into a VPS I rented from a company that didn't care about w/e and launch my irssi instance from there. Then I'd use irssi to get files, and eventually download archived contents from my server ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LameBMX · 2022-10-25 01:31 Umm why wouldn't law enforcement just read RFC 1459? https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc1459 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Least_Tomorrow357 · 2022-10-25 01:32 Some servers offer encrypted dcc connections. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- killerj666 · 2022-10-25 01:33 Well, you just touched the FISHY QUESTION via reddit comment. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- linuxnt · 2022-10-25 03:04 If your connection is over SSL. Nope. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- littlegreendroid · 2022-10-25 06:57 To answer your question specifically- yes, they will be able to see how much you download. If the transfer is encrypted, they won’t see the content, but they will know how much data has been transferred. The only way to avoid this would be to use another ISP, or use your mobile as a hotspot - if that isn’t what you’re doing already? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-10-25 08:42 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neil_bateman · 2022-10-25 09:07 thanks for the explanation, i appreciate it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bongo_kip · 2022-10-25 16:55 They can see everything you do, that's why it's better to encrypt all traffic if possible ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zsevenone · 2022-10-25 20:24 What about if you use a VPN, can they still see? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- M32H9 · 2022-11-15 21:44 ...damn.
