New to IRC and need help connecting to servers reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Eccentrici21 · 2022-10-06 02:08 Hi, I'm not completely new to these sort of things, I have used XMPP before so I have a gist of how thing work. I know on XMPP, you can message anyone with @, but how can this be done on IRC? I registered xzntrc@[irc.au.libera.chat](https://irc.au.libera.chat), but now I'd like to join a channel hosted on rizon. I'd also like to PM someone who has his own server. How do I go about all this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-10-06 03:02 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bongo_kip · 2022-10-06 03:04 you connect to their server, irc isnt federated like xmpp ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KindOne · 2022-10-06 03:05 You need to create a separate connection to Rizon. It might be ```/server irc.rizon.net``` or ```/connect irc.rizon.net``` Check your irc client’s documentation on how to make another connection. For someone elses server, you also need to connect to that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EnterprisePaulaBeans · 2022-10-06 03:11 The concept of "server" means less than you're used to from XMPP. IRC users mostly discuss entire "networks", like Libera and Rizon; we'd say you have "xzntrc on the Libera network", not on irc.au.libera.chat specifically. With that out of the way: * An account registered on one network is limited to that network only and can't be used on another network. You would need to register the nick again on Rizon. * A user can message anyone else on the network (subject to restrictions), but can't message users on any other network. You would need to connect to Rizon in order to PM Rizon users. You would need to ask how to connect to your friend's own server and then you could PM them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Eccentrici21 · 2022-10-06 03:42 Thanks! Also do I have to be online to get their response. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EnterprisePaulaBeans · 2022-10-06 03:48 Yes unless you use a bouncer, which is a relay that holds messages you get while offline. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Big-Fox-6169 · 2022-10-06 07:33 Better way: get a BNC account and stay connected 24/7. If you or someone looking for free BNC, i offering free BNC accounts. Just join my server and request it! Server: mpxd.pl, port 6667 - plain text or 6697 TLS. Also you can connect via web browser gate: https://mpxd.pl:8080/ channel #znc.
