Good/bad? Forcing users to join a channel at connection reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-09-21 03:48 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deepend_tilde · 2022-09-21 04:52 On one of my networks I have a force join to #helpdesk if they don’t join a channel within a set amount of time. I use inspircd as my ircd of choice ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-09-21 05:18 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rockintheairwaves · 2022-09-21 10:57 How do you make that happen **only** if they haven’t joined another channel first? I see an option for a delay, but it doesn’t say it’s conditional on whether they joined another channel or not. Now you have me curious. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-09-21 12:29 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-09-21 15:00 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CannedDeath · 2022-09-21 17:47 Speaking as a longtime IRC user, this is annoying unless there's literally only one public channel on the server. Usually if I want to know which channels is the main help channel, I'll look at the MOTD or join \#help. If I want to know what the big social channels are, I'll look at the MOTD, /list (for smaller networks) or IRC.netsplit.de (for larger networks). For newer users, it might be helpful to have a link to a web client that automatically joins a channel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- trekkie1701c · 2022-09-21 19:12 This is why I used it on one server I run. Most channels are 'public' but because of the nature of the server you generally shouldn't be in any of those channels unless you're actively doing something. There's one channel that's not only an exception to that, but that the users should generally be in at all times (the server is for a collaborative creative project). So it made sense to set it up so that all users autojoin that channel, since on this one server they should be there anyways. For a general purpose chat/socializing server though it'd be annoying to clutter my channel list with irrelevancies. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-09-21 19:17 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deepend_tilde · 2022-09-22 00:04 The delay option does it. If I join a channel Right away it doesn’t join the user to the #helpdesk.
