why are there so many mean people on irc? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aburnguy · 2022-09-05 23:14 is it just me? people seem more nice on discord. I want to like IRC but this keeps on showing up. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DDashingDevil · 2022-09-05 23:57 Old people are salty? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pandadub_lostship · 2022-09-06 00:12 which server are u into to? I welcome you to snoonet #brasil ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-09-06 00:23 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- acydlord · 2022-09-06 00:41 IRC is like the last bastion of the old guard of the internet. Most of us are there to hide from the endless September and just want to play multiplayer notepad in peace. TLDR: We're a bunch of salty oldheads Edit: Find a server and channels to hang out in that aren't full of dbags, every server and channel has their own community and it tends to be very cliquish. Many people stopped being as active on IRC nets as more communities moved to discord so some channels are populated by the leftover garbage. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EnterprisePaulaBeans · 2022-09-06 01:17 Some of it is they're genuinely meaner. But not all of it. Some of it is that IRC culture expects more of its users. Using a search engine to check acronyms before asking what they are. When asking for technical help, doing your best to fix the problem yourself, then documenting what you've tried ([see this guide](http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html), although fuck esr). Before sending a message, taking a split second to think about what it's meant to accomplish and how it contributes to the channel. Generally, lurking before posting, and putting more thought into what you write. When people in a channel don't think you're putting in effort, they'll tell you. This culture probably comes off as mean to the average noob, and they would have a point. Such a culture has advantages and disadvantages. Written/unwritten rules get applied more harshly to noobs. The culture is more hierarchical/seniority-driven. One advantage, though, is these rules all increase the signal-to-noise ratio, making reading the channel a more pleasant experience. Age probably also plays a role. To really generalize, older people tend to find younger people obnoxious. IRC is full of older people (and young people who act old), so if you join and act "young" (this is difficult to define, but is immediately obvious to anyone who's sufficiently observant), you'll get pushback. There are also different ways people on IRC and Discord are nice and supportive. Discord users are surface-level nice to everyone. IRC users honestly might be more supportive/nice, but it's reserved for people they've known for a while because it's exhausting to invest that much in every new person who joins. But! As a community grows, it's more likely that _someone_ is available to provide emotional support, so I'm sure you can find supportive people on most Discord servers. Additionally, shoutout to #boardgames on Libera, though, who thoroughly buck this trend by being very friendly and welcoming to every new user. I don't know how they do it. The Rust compiler community does the same thing. Honestly, it's a more sustainable community pattern because visitors are going to stick around more. I went off the rails for the last paragraph but hope that helps. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonno_FTW · 2022-09-06 04:09 Like anything, there will be mean and nice people everywhere, this extends to both discord and IRC. I've seen far more scammers on discord fwiw though. On IRC, I did once (around 2009) witness and participate in a multiday argument between a pakistani muslim (who believed we would all burn in hell) and everyone else. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thankyoufatmember · 2022-09-06 04:54 We're not mean, just grumpy 😊 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Christmas_Crackers · 2022-09-06 05:51 /KLINE +aburnguy@r/irc | aburnguy 0 not mean enough ---------------------------------------------------------------------- borg99n · 2022-09-06 16:40 depends on the network efnet is full of sociopaths dalnet is super friendly rizon is the "reformed bully" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KindOne · 2022-09-06 19:16 Discord is a single platform owned by one company. If you violate their rules they can ban your account from the entire platform. IRC has 500+ publicly known independent networks that are each managed in different ways. IRC is considerably more dynamic on the rules. Some networks and channels have very strict rules and others just don't care what you do as long as it does not get the police involved. IRC you can get banned from one network and pick one of the 500+ other networks to be a mean person. ... People on IRC is delightful. Try talking less and reading more. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TelescopiumHerscheli · 2022-09-09 11:02 People on IRC tend to be more concerned about privacy. They're not keen on having their chats logged by Discord. The other side of this coin is that they're generally less nervous about being salty, as it's not being logged. (Read the Discord privacy policy carefully: it's a little masterpiece of wording that appears to imply that your conversations are private, while actually meaning the reverse.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deepend_tilde · 2022-09-10 23:54 some irc networks are worst then others.
