I used /Whois on myself in a IRC channel and it displayed my ip address. reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lfh_g · 2022-07-02 14:45 Does this mean everyone in the channel can see my ip address. Can everybody in the channel see every message in the channel? Sorry for noob question, im very new to IRC and im using hexchat. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- schwiftshop · 2022-07-02 14:54 so yep, your IP is not protected. Anyone would get the same info from doing whois on you. no, the response from whois was just displayed in the channel, it came from the server to hexchat. There may be a setting (been a while since I used hexchat) to change the font or color of server messages or send them to their own window, that might help you see what's coming from where. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scriminal · 2022-07-02 15:08 They do can whois you and see your ip , yes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ManiaGamine · 2022-07-02 15:09 It depends on the network and thus the ircd they are using but most ircds do what is known as IP cloaking which hides your IP behind a mask or virtual host but they all let the user and IRC operators who have the right privileges view the IP address. If it shows your main user@host line with a mask and your real IP on a separate line then it is masked and while you can see it others will not except for network staff. If it shows your IP on the main user@host line then it probably is visible to others. It can also be checked based on the user mode +x which is almost always the cloaking mode. Hope this helps. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lfh_g · 2022-07-02 15:50 > so yep, your IP is not protected. Anyone would get the same info from doing whois on you I did a /whois on someone in the channel userlist, but I didn't that user's ip address. I think this channel masks the ip address of users. Im in a Rizon network btw > There may be a setting (been a while since I used hexchat) to change the font or color of server messages or send them to their own window i will see if i can do this setting ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lfh_g · 2022-07-02 15:56 > most ircds do what is known as IP cloaking which hides your IP behind a mask or virtual host but they all let the user and IRC operators who have the right privileges view the IP address. I think youre right. The channel i joined doesnt let me view the ip address of other users when i do a /whois on them. >It can also be checked based on the user mode +x which is almost always the cloaking mode I didnt understand this part? How do I check this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- djDef80 · 2022-07-02 16:30 They are referring to your user modes you set on your self . On your nick. Like +i for invisibility or other options that are network specific. See EFnet user modes for example in this url http://www.efnet.org/?module=docs&doc=15 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- codeDude123 · 2022-07-02 16:42 I'm pretty new too but I figured out some stuff. If you connects to a network for the first time, it's sure that everybody can see you IP. So you should activate a clocking. It should hide your IP to some users. I think that the admins could still see your IP address. Each different networks have it own way to active the clocking, for example in Liberachat exists a channel to do it. However most of the cases you should start creating a logging in the server, you can do that with the NickServ bot of the server(if the network use it) When you have your account you could active the clocking service, you should join to a lobby channel to ask for more information. If you want more security, you can use the Tor network, You should install the Tor socket (no Tor browser) on your machine. Then you should create a SSL certificate in your local machine, get the fingerprint of this certificate and put it on on your network configuration of your client, in this case your client is hexchat(I don't know how to do it in this client) Use NickServ to put the fingerprint on your account on the network Quit of the network, activate the SSL logging, try to login and now you could do it without put your password. Now quit of the server again and add the Tor socket on the configuration of the server and that's it . Congrats you are a hacker hahahaha I mean with Tor socket anyone including the admins will not able see your IP address Nerveless the network should have this option to do it. I'm pretty sure that the LiberaChat documentation have more information of all the stuff that I mentioned here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SadieCat69 · 2022-07-02 18:01 If it shows your IP in the "real IP and host" field then no. If it shows it in the user/host field then yes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thischildslife · 2022-07-02 19:53 On rizon you can request a custom cloak using hostserv. /msg hostserv request my.custom.cloak.cool and when it gets approved you can /msg hostserv on to turn it on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- masturkiller · 2022-07-04 17:58 Get Irccloud.
