Having issues installing atheme or anope reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MhmSureBro · 2022-05-05 02:04 Hi, so I'm posting with the hopes someone might be able to help me. I've set up several different IRC networks following different guides online, I have no problem getting the irc network running but as soon as I hit the part of the various guides where it comes to adding anope or atheme something goes wrong no matter what guide I try (unable to write pid in terms of atheme below and with anope the guides straight up were too outdated to use). I've currently had the most success using the guide below but again, it gets stuck when running atheme-services, with it unable to write pid. https://www.vultr.com/docs/setting-up-an-inspircd-irc-server-on- ubuntu-16-04-lts/ Does anyone have an up to date guide or is perhaps able to help me on here or pm if they have more experience facing the same problems? At this point I'm struggling. Just need NickServ etc, don't really mind what ircd as long as I can actually get them to work. From what I can see though Inspircd + Atheme are most popular. EDIT: Fixed, see comments if you are also having the same problems. If anyone wants to pop by and see how I got it set up in the end or just to say hello you are welcome. :) irc.rwrp.net ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RonDiaz · 2022-05-05 03:58 Ergo has NickServ built in and was simple enough to install for a dim like me ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MhmSureBro · 2022-05-05 14:45 For anyone wondering I went with the suggested Ergo, and it really is a game changer. Documentation is modern and extensive and completely up to date. It allows normally advanced features right out of the box, and is written in Go so performs amazingly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MhmSureBro · 2022-05-05 14:47 I did end up using Ergo so thank you for pointing me in that direction, from what I can see so far it honestly outperforms any of the other ircd + services (at least on a small scale so far). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RonDiaz · 2022-05-05 22:42 Awesome, yeah idk if it scales large. But for me it's a personal thing for like half a dozen people and it was way easier to set up aka I actually got it running and the built in NickServ was great and also the message playback is very cool. Have fun! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hot_Kaleidoscope_518 · 2022-05-12 23:31 I followed the [Libera Docs](https://libera.chat/guides/) and it simple worked... I love [GNU](https://www.gnu.org/) , which only uses Libera Chat for it's communication concerning [various projects](https://www.gnu.org/cgi-bin/estseek.cgi?phrase=libera+chat&p erpage=10&attr=&order=&clip=-1&navi=0). This led me to rediscover IRC in general. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lazy-xo · 2022-05-20 02:19 Can I ask why you even want to have these running at all? Is there a reason to use nick registration outside of something like libre (open source or community projects)? Just curious as it seems you’ve got things running but not sure why. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lazy-xo · 2022-05-20 02:23 The only network I can think of where having these makes any sense. It’s nice to hear the documentation is extensive but these aren’t really needed or wanted by a lot of people / doesn’t necessarily require following their model down to implementing every “feature”. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lazy-xo · 2022-05-20 02:29 Never mind - y’all are ok with irc3 - have at it :) - (am glad you solved your problem just don’t agree (along with others) irc3 is the direction we need to take irc moving forward ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hot_Kaleidoscope_518 · 2022-05-20 07:55 It's primarily because these projects require [GPG key pairs](https://docs.github.com/en/authentication/managing-commit- signature-verification/generating-a-new-gpg-key) for developing software inline with [GNU Standards](https://www.gnu.org/prep/standards/standards.html). This is what Libera Chat is for.... developers talking shop. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lazy-xo · 2022-05-20 12:45 Oh - if my comments came across as anti libre that’s not how i feel. In the case of libre or any open source project or community it’s absolutely the place for what and how the network is structured and controls in place. Outside of these is where I’m anti feeling if that’s a term.
