I put my IRC server on a somewhat normal port reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JSV007 · 2022-04-14 17:36 Hi, I'd like to be able to use IRC in places where a large range of ports are blocked, would it be possible to say put my IRC server on port 443/80 (default HTTPS/HTTP ports Im pretty sure) , would that interfere with anything ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skizzerz1 · 2022-04-14 18:04 It'd only interfere if you tried to run other things on those ports at the same time on whatever server your ircd lives on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-04-14 18:05 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kellyzdude · 2022-04-14 20:03 IF you'r'e trying to allow people on more secured connections, there's a good chance that they are using a proxy of some form and, if that is the case, a better chance that their proxy will balk when it connects to something that isn't trying to talk HTTP (before or after going through a TLS/SSL phase). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I-am-fun-at-parties · 2022-04-14 23:40 This is pretty much nonsense ---------------------------------------------------------------------- annacrontab · 2022-04-15 02:22 I've been behind locked down networks and have run things like SSH and OpenVPN on SSL POP3 port 995 since it's usually open and I otherwise don't use it for anything. Ports are conventional and arbitrary, you can run whatever service you like on whatever port, but be careful about what clients expect. But I think specifying irc.yourdomain.tld:995 or whatever would work if you're not running an email server otherwise. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aftli · 2022-04-15 04:07 "Somewhat normal"? A normal port for an IRC server is 6665 through 6669 (most commonly 6667) and [6697](https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc7194)/7000 for SSL by convention. Not 80 and 443, as those ports are not assigned to/normal *at all* for IRC servers. An IRC server does not care what port it's run on. It's just a number. That said, you may get lots of bots/web crawlers attempting to connect to our IRC server because you're using the same port as web servers do, and that's one of the reasons you should stick to correct port numbers. Also, port 80 and 443 are more likely to be blocked by ISPs for inbound traffic. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JSV007 · 2022-04-15 04:14 Tysm! I'll test it!
