Is everyone an op in a TOR IRC server? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Debiuu · 2022-04-13 00:06 im experimenting with my own irc server over tor, and everytime i connect im op (different devices n stuff too). Can someone explain? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arcalion · 2022-04-13 01:43 This has nothing to do with Tor. The default for an irc server is that if you join an empty channel, you're an op. If a second person joined, they wouldn't be. (By default, barring any special additional/services setup). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Debiuu · 2022-04-13 01:44 I see! Is there any way to disable this? Cheers! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ArlenM · 2022-04-13 02:16 Historically they would use a bot (a continuously running script that mimics a user) to hold onto op status when everyone else was logged out and grant it back to appropriate users as they logged back on. The bot could be hosted on the same server as the IRC server but usually was not. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CapnSupermarket · 2022-04-13 11:01 /u/Debiuu I'm not sure which servers may support this feature, but DALnet had chanserv that would monitor channels and deop anyone not registered by the channel owner. Nickserv for reserving nicks, too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ramjithunder24 · 2022-04-13 12:36 If you don't mind, can you share a link to your server? Ever since IRC has been going downhill, I've been constantly searching for places to hang out~ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HumansAreRobots · 2022-04-13 14:05 The IRCd automatically giving op to the first user to join an empty channel is a pretty well-cemented part of IRC. There might be an option to change it in the IRCd config, or perhaps an add-on module (for the IRCd) of some sort that you or another person can create. Out of curiosity, why would you want to disable it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arcalion · 2022-04-13 21:30 I'm a little late but I agree with all of the other answers, especially /u/HumansAreRobots. I also agree that humans are robots, but that's neither here nor there. It's tough to answer without knowing more technical detail about what server software you're using, etc. I'm reasonably certain UnrealIRCD supports what you're trying to do and I think one or two other ircds do as well. Likely easier to have a bot sit in there with ops (or even join, and set mode -o) - then as long as the bot is connected, no one else would get it. Or use some chanserv type service. I'm also curious as to why you would want this, though :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WebChronicles · 2022-04-13 23:00 Try snoonet casualconversation, last time I checked there was more than a few people on there! I'm thinking about starting my own IRC chatroom, but idk how many will actually stay haha
