Out of Curiosity, What are bots spamming file names in channel do?

Elite-warez, Moviegods etc channel have a chat channel and another
channel where bots are spamming names of the available files.

I was wondering what purpose does it serve, perhaps someone IRC
veteran  can explain what is going on.

I’m not sure if these are the ones you’re talking about but XDCC bots
would usually spam the name of the file that they hold on their
servers and then you can msg the bot: XDCC SEND “filename” and the bot
would send you the file.

Way back in the days like 20 years ago we used to run such channels
which had 50-100 bots each holding 1-2gb of stuff (limited space back
then) even movies were split into 2-3 100/150mb files to avoid issues
during download.

Useful for getting a full list of what they offer. Various scripts
exist that will download anything that matches what you want
automatically.

Also used by crawlers, like this site below. It's not realtime and I
have no idea how often its updated maybe 12 or 24 hours off of pure
guessing.

They are #pre and #tracers channels. A pre-time in the warez scene is
basically when a release group made that release available on a
topsite. #tracers is torrent racers, and it's basically various
private torrent sites competing to have the best pre-time (time after
pre for the torrent to be available on their site).

Op just list end user channels, not any scene chans. Probably good to
get back hush because streaming is tearing itself apart to the point
pirating is becoming an option again to more people.

The majority of the spam is what has been added to download on fserve
or channel bots via xdcc. Also you will see people doing searchs of
the bots for different things. You also see quite a few people who do
not understand how to use the xdcc commands and screwing it up. I have
my client installed with a script to record all the links, and makes
it easier to download something. Used to be elite-warez has its own
script that was written by mruno. Google mruno or elite-warez, is how
i used to find the scripting for mirc. I really do not use mirc
anymore but i used to excusively use irc for all my downloading. This
used to be the "scene" before torrent, usenet and the many other ways
to trade files.
