Ok, to all of you IRC pros out there, this may seem obvius. But ive
searched everywhere, and I cant find a solution that actually works.
Basically I entered the server address, filled in the port. Then when
i tried to connect, it just gave me the error message "ERROR NON-SSL
command received on SSL-only port. Check your connection settings."

I tried getting a SSL via options - SSL (Yes i am using mIRC), but
when i reached the SSL "page", I generated a key file, set it. then i
did the same for the certificate chain file. Is there something
obvious im missing?

/server irc.example.com +6697

+ tells mirc that its ssl port your connecting to
