What are some obscure or sparsely-populated IRC servers? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Honkmaster · 2022-02-26 04:37 Search engines only want to show me what the top networks are, but I'm curious how small/specific it gets with public networks. I figure word-of-mouth is the best way to go about satisfying this curiosity. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- annacrontab · 2022-02-26 05:31 My IRC server is technically public, but no one can really do anything on it besides establish a connection and see the MOTD. I host it just to talk to my boyfriend. I didn't fool with Nickserv or Chanserv. It's hosted on a little VPS with a dedicated IPv4 address. I have the DNS at CloudFlare and irc.mydomain.tld isn't behind the CF proxy, it resolves directly. I use the CloudFlare API with certbot for a wildcard cert. Locked the config down - you can't list or create channels or list users. There's a single persistent static channel with a key defined in the config. So my boyfriend and I connect to that and we don't really worry about anyone intruding. I've been running this over 2 years and no one else but us has ever connected to our room. I have far fewer bots connecting since I closed non-SSL port 6667 in the firewall (I use ufw) and only having the SSL port 6697 open. I run IRC on irc.mydomain.tld and then some other stuff on the domain, so a wildcard cert works with all that. So, maybe that helps satisfy a bit of curiosity on how small and specific public IRC networks can be? Mine is technically public, but basically only has two people. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-02-26 07:35 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mineaum · 2022-02-26 08:37 We had an IRC server with a couple hundred users that migrated from qnet. But it is down since 2 years by now already ---------------------------------------------------------------------- P4k3 · 2022-02-26 11:51 Im hosting a server on a network with around 50 users. Think we started it in 2002. Sadly its pretty inactive nowdays. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MeowWhat · 2022-02-26 14:58 Can I join? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MeowWhat · 2022-02-26 15:00 I've been hoping to find a casual channel somewhere to hang out in that's active at least a couple times a day. Way back in the early 00's I could connect to rizon and have a conversation any time of day. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- McDutchie · 2022-02-26 15:08 irc.starlink-irc.org — a small friendly cybertown since the 1990s. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CatfaceMcMeowMeow · 2022-02-26 18:05 I've been running a server for eleven years that probably peaked at about 30 users. It was a spin-off of a channel for a local nerd meeting. The last network we were on had a real bad storm of netsplits and trolls and I decided it was worth a $5/mo VPS to solve both problems. The nice thing about having a single server is that technically, you can't have a netsplit 😺 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- l3gacyb3ta · 2022-02-26 20:06 join apionet! https://apionet.gh0.pw/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- akahalls · 2022-02-26 20:20 We had an IRC network to run Quidditch games (jo-ken-po on privmsg). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dowcet · 2022-02-26 23:00 For real... Even the busiest IRC servers I've been on feel like ghost towns compared to Discord these days. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-02-27 00:47 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chicametipo · 2022-02-27 01:44 IRC being a ghost town makes my stomach tighten in a form of painful, longing nostalgia. We’ll never see those glory days again.
