Nobody else is aware that you're obtaining the item. With torrents you're announcing that you have movie/tv show/etc. in question to the world and you're connecting to dozens or hundreds of other peers - any of which could be a RIAA/MPAA narc. A long-winded way of saying - no, you don't need a VPN specifically for IRC. If you already have a VPN for other uses, then there's no harm in running IRC through it. Now some IRC channels (i'm thinking ebooks) require that you announce your request in public where all members of the channel can see what you're requesting. A really small percentage use FSERVE, which doesn't require that you announce your request. Also, even tho most IRC servers use SSL for encryption, i'm unsure if that applies to direct connection between 2 users either. Again, only your ISP could read the contents (if unencrypted). And again, most wouldn't give a damn ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Peckchamp · 2022-02-03 22:54 thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ramjithunder24 · 2022-02-05 02:07 Hi, could you recommend some IRC clients where DCC works? I've tried to get some files over DCC in KiwiIRC but I'm not sure how to do it. Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ByGollie · 2022-02-05 08:20 mIRC and HexChat both work well, but you typically have to go into the settings and enable acceptance of file transfers (prevents unsolicited files being sent) https://www.mirc.com/help/html/index.html?dcc.html https://hexchat.readthedocs.io/en/latest/settings.html (scroll down for dcc) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ramjithunder24 · 2022-02-05 15:12 Thx! I just installed mIRC and it works! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Peckchamp · 2022-02-06 23:37 thx ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Greedy_Result_2699 · 2022-03-02 00:58 I know this is old but in my humble I would never accept a dcc unless I really know the person that wants to send it.
