Making my first server and I have some questions

Im following this guide and am on page 6, server configuration, and
have a question about setting the server IP. Does it have to be my
home IP, or can I set it to something else, or setup a DNS where it
could be that custom name instead of my actual IP. What should I do
for this ?

Also for the port I presume I should just open up that port on my
router and on my server?

It has to be the IP of the server on the local network. This is used
for the server to know on which interface (ie. roughly, which network
card) it should listen on. You can [omit the `address=""` part
entirely to listen on all
interfaces](https://docs.inspircd.org/3/configuration/#example-
usage_4), that will save you some trouble.

Yes


Also, I recommend you do not use this guide. It is very outdated, so
you should follow the instructions on
https://docs.inspircd.org/3/installation/ instead

Ah ok thanks for all the info, I'll follow it when I get home. When
you say local network you mean just my local network as in
192.168.1.153? But how could you connect to it outside of that ? Just
a tad confused.

You need to port-forward your home router to 192.168.1.153.  People
from the outside will point their IRC clients to your
external/Internet address, then your router will forward to the
machine on your network @ 192.168.1.153.
