Hopefully it's a Linux machine. #2. You really should [secure it](https://www.open-scap.org/) before attempting to make it public. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LameBMX · 2022-01-21 20:39 You can do your own googling. I don't see anybody twitch streaming a software install / configuration. Besides, I don't even have a clue what OS you run. I would hazard a guess you probably want the easiest to configure irc daemon if asking for a video. But who knows, seems you have your own external private server, so my assumption of skill could be wrong, or misplaced. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Many_Hour_2598 · 2022-01-21 21:14 I'm running ubuntu 20.04 Desktop and i'm already know how to setup a local irc server but i want to use it non locally ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-01-21 21:16 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Robosham · 2022-01-21 22:06 If you want a simple ircd to setup I recommend https://www.unrealircd.org/ If you want a highly customizable ircd to setup https://www.inspircd.org/ Also you will want services https://www.anope.org/ If you need help I can setup it for a small fee. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WebChronicles · 2022-01-21 22:09 As the man suggested use Google, hell first thing that should pop up is an official tutorial by the Ubuntu team on how to make your own IRC server... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LameBMX · 2022-01-21 22:41 Get a dns subnet on afraid.net , point it home. Forward needed ports. Connect outside home via dns. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pogzap · 2022-01-21 23:09 Yes, unrealircd is the way to go. https://www.unrealircd.org/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ChatSansardotcom · 2022-01-21 23:21 What do you mean by setting up local and non locally IRC servers? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- akahalls · 2022-01-22 00:14 Ergo chat, best simple ircd. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pedz · 2022-01-22 03:15 I've gone through that process on Debian recently so maybe this can help a bit. 1. Install development packages and all dependencies using sudo apt- get install build-essential pkg-config libssl-dev libpcre2-dev libargon2-0-dev libsodium-dev libc-ares-dev libcurl4-openssl-dev 2. Create account for the ircd with adduser uircd 3. Su into that user with su uircd - 4. Download unrealircd: wget https://www.unrealircd.org/downloads/unrealircd-6.0.1.1.tar.gz 5. Unpack it with tar -zxvf unrealircd-6.0.1.1.tar.gz 6. Go in the directory with cd unrealircd-6.0.1.1/ 7. Compile and install the server with those commands: ./Config, make, make install. 8. Once done, go in the directory of the installation and copy the default config file with cp conf/examples/example.conf conf/unrealircd.conf 9. Edit that file to configure and personalize your server. Use nano conf/unrealircd.conf or whatever you want. Save & quit with Ctrl+X when done. 10. Finally, start the server with ./unrealircd start Then test it by trying to connect to the server's IP with your IRC client. The most important thing to learn is not exactly the command-line-fu but rather to explore and make sure your config file is all right. It may take a few tries to get it right. If it's working locally but not on the internet, Ubuntu's firewall may be blocking port 6667 and/or 6697 (TLS) and you may want to look into opening those ports. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sje46 · 2022-01-22 03:19 This is an excellent project to teach you some good linux skills. I would install unrealircd READ THE DOCUMENTATION (the config file is no joke, read through the whole thing, and it'll know if you didn't). Then you need to forward a port, something else for you to research that depends on your router. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProgVal · 2022-01-22 10:27 1. Get a domain name and make it point it to your server 2. Pick an ircd 3. read the install and configuration documentation of the ircd you chose ([Ergo](https://github.com/ergochat/ergo/blob/master/docs/MANUAL.md), [InspIRCd](https://docs.inspircd.org/), [UnrealIRCd](https://www.unrealircd.org/docs/Main_Page)) 4. start the ircd then, if you didn't chose Ergo (which has its own built-in service package, so you don't need one): 5. pick a service package 6. read the install and configuration documentation of the service package you chose ([Anope](https://wiki.anope.org/index.php/Main_Page), [Atheme](https://github.com/atheme/atheme/wiki)) 7. start the service package If you run into any problem, join the IRC channel of the software you have trouble with and ask your questions; or ask them on this subreddit. Just make sure to describe the exact issue you have, or people won't be able to help. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hopingforabetterpast · 2022-01-22 13:57 local irc server?
