Need to be on Windows for a time, any clients with a good dark theme? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thrik · 2022-01-13 16:23 Annoying how hard this is to achieve on Windows honestly. I know there are terminal-based clients but I'd rather run an app. edit: KiwiIRC, a web-based client, seems to be the best so far, if anyone else is wondering. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- titioitit · 2022-01-13 16:39 mIRC has fully customizable color themes ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thrik · 2022-01-13 16:44 Does it include every surface of the app? Thanks edit: Doesn't look like it: https://i.imgur.com/Xo63wtW.png This is ugly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- titioitit · 2022-01-13 17:07 Try making components slightly different colors- how the fuck do you expect to differentiate anything otherwise? If you think something ugly, change it- that's what full customization means. Example- [https://imgur.com/03I0Chf](https://imgur.com/03I0Chf) If you want pure black minimalism use irssi. If you want a customizable gui cllient, use mIRC. Yes, it includes every 'surface' of the app. Border colors are a setting in Windows. By the way, running something in a terminal is 'running an app'. An application is executed code performing continuous function. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thrik · 2022-01-13 17:10 Sure, it just doesn't seem like IRC on Windows has caught up to having a proper dark theme like most modern apps. It wasn't about the text being different colors, as you can see from the screenshot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- titioitit · 2022-01-13 17:14 What I see on the screenshot is that you made everything black and think it's ugly. Customize it. 'IRC on windows' is not a single or even a group of applications; IRC is an internet protocol which just requires a client and a server to connect to. I don't think what you want is a dark theme, I think you want an interface designed with CSS. That is a different question than 'wanting a dark theme'- you should know what you really want if you're going to call things ugly. [https://quassel- irc.org/files/images/snapshot13.preview.png](https://quassel- irc.org/files/images/snapshot13.preview.png) Look into Quassel if you want a bubbly 'modern' interface ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thrik · 2022-01-13 17:21 > What I see on the screenshot is that you made everything black and think it's ugly. Why would you think that when I came in here asking for a dark theme? If you've spent any time on modern apps, you'd realize that most apps have basic theming down by now. Quassel might be good enough tho. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- titioitit · 2022-01-13 17:23 What the hell are you talking about now? You said, "It wasn't about the text being different colors, as you can see from the screenshot"- I responded by saying that in that screenshot, you made everything black and think it's ugly. I have spent time on modern apps; I write them for a living. Most apps have basic theming; many apps have extensive theming. mIRC has extensive theming- you can customize it yourself entirely. You saying that it is ugly is your own fault. You're insufferable. Glad that Quassel will work for you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thrik · 2022-01-13 17:33 Oof. Good luck with all that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- titioitit · 2022-01-13 17:36 l2r ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ByGollie · 2022-01-13 20:53 Hexchat ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thrik · 2022-01-13 20:53 HexChat has pretty terrible theming for Windows. I used it on Linux though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ironmoosen · 2022-01-13 21:13 I haven't used mIRC in a few months but I was never able to get a good dark theme working. Quassel does pretty good with a custom stylesheet. https://bugs.quassel-irc.org/projects/1/wiki/Stylesheet\_Gallery ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thrik · 2022-01-13 21:41 Right, it was obvious that person didn't know what they were talking about lol, despite apparently coding modern apps for a living. I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to find out, but do you know where Quassel puts these QSS files (so I can overwrite it)? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ironmoosen · 2022-01-13 21:44 You can save the style sheet anywhere and just select it from within Quassel settings. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thrik · 2022-01-13 21:45 Perfect, appreciate it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nawcom · 2022-01-13 22:38 Hexchat's themes are no different on Windows than on Linux. They're the same themes, and look exactly the same regardless of the OS. https://hexchat.github.io/themes.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thrik · 2022-01-13 23:18 I'm guessing you haven't used Hexchat on Windows, lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dukwon · 2022-01-14 12:15 Even on Linux I have to hack the `.desktop` file to get a proper dark theme, since it's the only GTK2 application I use: Exec=env GTK2_RC_FILES=/usr/share/themes/Mint-Y-Dark- Red/gtk-2.0/gtkrc hexchat --existing %U ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thrik · 2022-01-14 16:04 I didn't have to hack anything on KDE at least. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- masturkiller · 2022-01-14 17:23 IRCCloud has a dark theme ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thrik · 2022-01-14 17:29 This almost checks all boxes, but I'm not about to subscribe and pay for an IRC client lol. The free tier only allowing you to stay connected for 2 hours of inactivity? Does that mean if I'm afk, it will DC me after 2 hours? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- masturkiller · 2022-01-14 17:31 Yes ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thrik · 2022-01-14 17:31 Well, if it wasn't for that, I'd prob still stick with it. Appreciate the recommendation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hexick_ · 2022-01-28 19:49 Personally, I use AdiIRC. It's convenient, decent for scripting, and for your case, has tons of aesthetic customizability + it's free. Def. something to look into. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hqppy · 2022-11-05 11:42 So it seems that almost every single windows client forces you to have theses disgusting white bars all around and between the interface. Quassel seemed nice, but i have to install a core to some kind of remote server as i just wanted a regular client... People says that you can install a "GTK2" theme for Hexchat, but i needed some scientific coder knowledge to install one, and anyway i just dont want to waste 3 hours installing a windows theme that i dont need, will probably not work or fuck up my regular theme.... The simple solution ? "Adiirc" ! free, easy to use, themes and no disgusting whites bars, in fact, you can customize EVERYTHING.
