good pc clients reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Drachenwulf · 2022-01-09 06:35 I apologize if this has been asked to death, but what are the really good IRC clients? both Free and purchasable? for the purchasable good means Worth the price you pay for it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nubatpython · 2022-01-09 07:47 I use Hexchat and it has all the functions I need. It doesn't seem to have a dark mode though. (I don't really use irc that much so I haven't really bothered digging through the settings.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Heartsworth · 2022-01-09 07:50 mIRC. It's been around for years, it's really customizable and it's hands down the best paid client in my opinion, especially for the price. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Drachenwulf · 2022-01-09 07:53 I have heard that there are issues with mIRC forgetting your key and requiring one to pay the fee again to get a new one... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MechMaster48 · 2022-01-09 07:54 WeeChat or Irssi. Been using WeeChat for years. Weechat is insanely customizable, but works just fine with the default configuration as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Heartsworth · 2022-01-09 07:56 I've personally never experienced this, neither has my wife. Would be interesting to see if any fellow Redditors have had that issue though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Drachenwulf · 2022-01-09 07:59 just looked at the web page for WeeChat... it says it's a plug in... does that mean it runs in a web browser? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- memphisgrit · 2022-01-09 08:01 mIRC is the one and only chosen one. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MechMaster48 · 2022-01-09 08:03 It runs in the CLI. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Drachenwulf · 2022-01-09 08:04 CLI? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MechMaster48 · 2022-01-09 08:08 The command line. If you are not as familiar with working in the command line I can also suggest Hexchat or if you are interested in a browser solution IRCCloud is fantastic as well. I use it on my phone and pay for the premium features ($5 a month), but you can use it for free as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Drachenwulf · 2022-01-09 08:09 I am not interested in a browser solution... I have been using irccloud and will continue using it on my phone and ipad, it slows down my poor old pc too much ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kirbszter · 2022-01-09 08:18 HexChat ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GATSY94 · 2022-01-09 08:27 irccloud or hexchat ---------------------------------------------------------------------- P4k3 · 2022-01-09 09:29 mIRC has changed how the license works a couple of years ago. Question: Will my registration work with newer versions of mIRC? Answer: If you are a home user, your registration entitles you to three years of free updates to new versions of mIRC. If you are a business user, you will need to renew your licenses yearly at a discount. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FaxInterface · 2022-01-09 13:01 mIRC no doubt been using it since 1996 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scrutinizer80 · 2022-01-09 15:28 AdiIRC ---------------------------------------------------------------------- masturkiller · 2022-01-11 05:04 Irccloud slows your PC?? That's a first ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Drachenwulf · 2022-01-11 05:13 My pc is old…. Ddr2 ram old ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Acrobatic-Ad-6718 · 2022-01-16 20:46 Honestly, there is no such thing as a really good or best IRC client. They all have their upsides and downsides and you always have to sacrifice something. The more or less flexible and convenient are HexChat and mIRC. Off the top of my head, here are the pros and cons of both: HexChat: Really flexible, tons of features, user-friendly but has an input box limitation - no multiline input support, which was inherited from X-Chat and is a problem with GTK. It can be quite annoying when you want to type long messages and revise them before sending. You may have to resort to notepad or some other text editor for that and then copy and paste it in your client, which is what I have to do sometimes. The goods news is that it has both Windows and Linux ports. mIRC: Doesn't have the above issue, but lacks some of the features such as custom action buttons for kicking, banning, logging in, etc. It's also Windows-only and has no support for SSL by default, you have to add OpenSSL library to your mIRC installation, which albeit not critical may be daunting to some users. Also, while popular at least in the past this client still is not as friendly and versatile particularly with regards to channel maintenance. In every other way it's a go. Can't say much about other clients but from my experience they all are either too simplistic or too bloated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Deep_Cricket_1965 · 2023-11-30 01:26 i love this.
