Setup irc with znc for employees reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hurleymjohnston · 2021-12-26 21:00 Hello! I want to replace email and whatsapp with irc. It seems to me that easy rooms, lack of image sending, all that emojis and other whistles are very good options. The only unhandy thing in irc is lack of message history. So I googled and found znc that can log messages and deliver to user when he logs in. But I don't know, how to make it useful for many workers without lot of manual work (creating users, passwords, managing rooms in web interface manually etc). Maybe you know some guide or script to automatize user registering and enabling znc logging? Also every your post about using irc as work messenger will be welcome. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- anths · 2021-12-26 21:24 Replacing WhatsApp seems fine (great), but replacing email with irc is a bad idea. Every organization I know of that has tried to do that with Slack or similar has found it to be a significant loss. They’re just too different. For the rest of your question, you want to read up on how “services”, especially nickserv, work. I’m not aware of any that integrate with existing directories, although I’ve not checked and that would seem like a decent idea. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _1b0t · 2021-12-26 21:33 Maby take a look on matrix server 🤔 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProgVal · 2021-12-26 21:49 Since you are willing to provide an IRC service, it would probably be easier for you to have your own IRC network/server and configure it to provide history itself, so you don't need to manage bouncers. [Ergo](h ttps://github.com/ergochat/ergo/blob/master/docs/MANUAL.md#history) (user manual [here](https://github.com/ergochat/ergo/blob/master/docs/ USERGUIDE.md#history)) is considered the most advanced in this direction, it can even [keep people in nick lists as if they were onli ne](https://github.com/ergochat/ergo/blob/master/docs/USERGUIDE.md#alw ays-on). [UnrealIRCd](https://www.unrealircd.org/docs/Channel_history) and [InspIRCd](https://docs.inspircd.org/3/modules/chanhistory/) support history too (though not the "always-on" and "multiple client with a single nick" features). Your coworkers won't need to do anything besides create an account on the network. Since you're in a company, you can probably even plug the network into your existing LDAP or whatever, so your employees don't even need to create a new account. Both [Atheme](https://github.com/atheme- legacy/atheme-6.0/blob/master/dist/atheme.conf.example#L1440) and [Ano pe](https://github.com/anope/anope/blob/683f42eeef9f82edcbf96349a21ed4 153a80837c/data/modules.example.conf#L236) (services packages you can use with either UnrealIRC or InspIRCd to handle user accounts) have a LDAP module; and so does [Ergo](https://github.com/ergochat/ergo-ldap) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ExBritNStuff · 2021-12-26 21:52 I love IRC, and at my last three companies (mostly the same employees who moved around) we used it for communication within our team, so I’m definitely not anti-IRC. That being said, it feels like you are trying to shoehorn IRC into somewhere it shouldn’t be. Message history and ‘true user association’ are two things that IRC doesn’t have, and any effort adding them would be better served by finding a different, more appropriate platform. And I hate being the one who answers “don’t do it” to questions like this because it annoys me when people say that to me :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LameBMX · 2021-12-26 22:22 Setup quassel core on a company server, then create users and identities on the core for each user. When their quassel clients log on, all the past info will be shown. Could probably install on same server as the ircd. Depending if you have a proper secure environment. Quassel also has phone apps, so they will have irc on their phone. Replacing email is bad though. Totally different service, and I assume your business sells something so outsiders will need to contact some of your employees. Plus the calendar for meetings (even if they are on irc). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hurleymjohnston · 2021-12-26 23:53 Thank you! I know that using irc is unpopular nowadays, but I hope it still can be good equivalent for Slack or Matrix. And Ergo looks good! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Final_Savings · 2021-12-27 07:31 Setting up an ergo server with history will be much easier for all parties involved. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- u801e · 2021-12-27 17:41 > replacing email with irc is a bad idea If anything should replace email (assuming it's used for threaded discussions), it's newsgroups (using an on premise NNTP server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zeamp · 2021-12-27 18:52 ZNC Partyline ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gallaxial · 2021-12-28 01:11 I use unrealircd and it have a histories with it ( /mode #general +H10:30 ), you can add the Service like anope to work with complet command to save channel/nick also have a memo with it, to have channel registered , i use at home computer , working fine, can connect another IRc server ---------------------------------------------------------------------- masturkiller · 2022-01-06 16:06 Use IRCCloud with there teams feature www.irccloud.com
