The new biggest network is libera.chat so I’d recommend starting
there.

Freenode became the biggest network and then was taken over by someone
else, and all of its communities moved to LiberaChat.

I'm a big fan of rizon.net because of the built-in features like auto-
cloak, custom vhosts with color, bot services, limit services, etc.
The staff on rizon.net don't censor users, monitor channels, or curate
content in any way.

Many privat Networks got taking down because of the scene (warez)
bust/raids last year :/

Go to almost any network you please & join #chat .  You'll likely find
people in that channel everywhere.  :)

Last I heard it's still alive, but has less than a thousand global
users. Also you have to authenticate via SASL to connect to it.

Stay on undernet in at least 2 political channels, used to go to
dalnet but the script kiddies all but killed it.
