When registering your nickname do you post "/msg NickServ REGISTER password email" in the room you are in and want to register to or in the main server part that first comes up and that registers you to all rooms? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- agnostic-infp-neet · 2021-12-08 04:03 I've accidentally posted my email before in a chat room years ago and never bothered to try again. Emails take cellphone ID's to be created now days, even protonmail did me that way, so it stressed me out thinking to try again... The current chat room I use does not allow you to have 'voice' until after you register and I'm afraid that if I don't register that I'll stop being manually added to be able to post, if I understand that is how it is working, my talking. The waiting period for 'autovoice' (as they seem to call it) is 2 weeks so I don't want to screw it up also for that reason. If no one is around I won't have someone do that +V thing I guess... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theLJR · 2021-12-08 04:14 You can do it in the status window when you connect. I always do this to avoid accidentally posting to a active channel. As a tip depending on your irc client you can setup perform action on connect to automatically identify yourself to nickserv. Hope this helps ---------------------------------------------------------------------- snowice0 · 2021-12-08 04:25 You are messaging the nickserv so you could message that from any window really but it's good practice to send the message from the status window to avoid accidentally sending something to the channel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ferrybig · 2021-12-08 07:54 When you register, you send a private message to the bot controlling the account NickServ. It is not a message send to a channel. Most IRC clients (though not all) see a message starting with / as a command, and since the next instruction is msg, those clients send a private message to the specified user ---------------------------------------------------------------------- killerj666 · 2021-12-08 08:15 Doesn’t matter as long as you have the / in front ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mendacity531 · 2021-12-08 12:09 You can do it from any window actually, but for security sakes I generally do it from the status window. By the way, it is IRC, it is called a channel window, not a room window. Take that AOL shit and deep six it right away. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mendacity531 · 2021-12-08 12:10 While technically you are correct, practicing good security should always matter. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- agnostic-infp-neet · 2021-12-08 12:58 I never used AOL actually. IRC chat room just sounds good as if you say IRC channel then it sounds less laymen and I am a layman when it comes to lots of things. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skizzerz1 · 2021-12-08 14:51 A registration with NickServ is global across all channels in the IRC network you are currently connected to. You do not need to register individually with each channel. On future connections, you will need to “identify” to your registered account in order to be able to use it (such as automatically receiving voice on a channel if you were added to that channel’s access list). Most clients have a place in the settings to specify your password so they can do it for you. If not, the command to do so is /msg NickServ IDENTIFY password. In both cases I recommend posting those commands in the main server tab or in a dedicated PM (Private Message) tab to NickServ. Most clients let you create dedicated PM tabs via /query NickServ. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iceking84 · 2023-04-14 14:28 I gotta say I could use help I’ve been trying to register with this nickserv for like an hour. I’m absolutely retarded when it comes to this kinda stuff and computers and I have no idea what I’m doing. I’ve tried googling and I tried doing it step by step, I got the nickname part but when I do my password and email it says failed 🤷🏻‍♂️
