How do you address someone but not through a pm? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- agnostic-infp-neet · 2021-12-03 00:41 Does this depend on the client? Do you type their nick then a colon and a colon? Is there a space before and after the colon? Do you use brackets around the name simultaneously? Do you only type the nick and something happens automatically? I used to know this years ago but never use IRC as usually there's someplace more active to talk (not anymore really). I'd assume it's something simple like "/nickname hello random person" or "@nickname hello random person" or something, or "nickname hello random person" or "nickname, hello random person", or "nickname: hello random person". So what is it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-12-03 00:50 first few letters of nickname then press tab ---------------------------------------------------------------------- agnostic-infp-neet · 2021-12-03 01:00 That finishes their name... so you just type a message after that and it will address them, possibly make a noise at them even, after doing that? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Final_Savings · 2021-12-03 01:04 There’s no special functionality to mention someone. Virtually all clients just look for your nickname in a message and if it pops up notifies you. So type in the persons nickname into a message in a channel they’re in. Most clients do tab-completion to help you out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- agnostic-infp-neet · 2021-12-03 01:12 Oh, that would make sense as the format was off. Towards me it had a comma after my name but PINGED anyway, some others had a colon after their name... thank you. I use AdiIRC by the way. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Giraffestock · 2021-12-03 01:54 Yeah. If you dont want to ping them (potentially cause a noise or send a notification) its common to add an apostrophe or underscore at the beginning or end. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- djDef80 · 2021-12-03 02:37 Yeah, first-few-letters-of-nick[tab]: type your message. /msg nickname this is my message; this will open a private query with them /notice nickname this is my message; this will show the direct message in the active window they have open, even if you aren't in the channel they are in. Considered somewhat rude. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProgVal · 2021-12-03 10:20 > this will show the direct message in the active window they have open That's not true. [Officially](https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rf c1459#section-4.4.2), the only difference between a notice and a regular message is that bots/scripts shouldn't reply to notices; and many clients (eg. Weechat) follow that. Only some clients (eg. Hexchat) display the notice in the current active window, as they assume notices are "important" messages (because this is what NickServ/ChanServ/... use to communicate).
