Local IRC Client (recipe) for Ferdi? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SlideRuleFan · 2021-11-29 21:45 Is anyone here using Ferdi as a unified messaging platform? It does a nice job of unifying Slack and Google (2 of the 3 tools my company uses), but I can't find a local IRC client for it. There is a recipe for IRCCloud, which works pretty well for public-facing IRC, but it doesn't function as a local IRC client for our internal IRC server. I have used chrome plug-ins and other local IRC clients like Xchat and Pidgin, but nothing for Ferdi. As an alternative, is anyone using a unified messaging app (for Linux) that combines Slack, Google Chat and (local) IRC? I'm not married to Ferdi. Thanks, \--SRF ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WebChronicles · 2021-11-30 07:24 I'm a complete noob to this, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but since no one else has responded yet hopefully my idea can help out a bit. By any chance have you tried Matrix? I know they have connections for Slack and IRC, also they used too for Hangouts, but I'm not too sure about Google Chat. Maybe you could try something with them? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SlideRuleFan · 2021-11-30 15:16 Thanks. I haven't seen Matrix before. Matrix looks interesting, but it looks like you have to set up a "homeserver" for your chat service, then connect the servers in both directions, one to the messaging provider ("bridge") and one to your client. I don't have a place to host the homeserver. I'm just looking for a client. I guess that's why Slack & Google are popular--they do the hard work for you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- huddled · 2021-11-30 21:32 > ...but it doesn't function as a local IRC client for our **internal** IRC server. You would install it next to that, or in place of it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SlideRuleFan · 2021-11-30 22:31 My initial post wasn't well worded. It may be "our" internal IRC server, but I don't own it. I can't put a Matrix or IRCCloud server anywhere in our network. I can only use a client. I did find a Ferdi recipe for [The Lounge](https://thelounge.chat/). The Lounge runs as a server on localhost, provides a web interface for your browser, and connects to any IRC server. It's not a standalone client, but it's easy enough to fire up the server and let it run in the background while Ferdi acts as my client. The only downside is having to restart The Lounge server if I restart my laptop. I now have a single messaging front end. I'd still be interested in anything that doesn't involve running something like The Lounge's server on my laptop. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iv4nh0e · 2022-06-15 15:50 Pidgin would be a unified messaging app. It has plugins for Slack and Google Chat. Right now there are some problems with Google Chat but it might be worth having an eye on r/pidgin to see if they fix that.
